Lady Eagles Go 1-1 in Gulf Shores Invitational

GULF SHORES, Ala. (3/2/24) - The Williams Baptist Lady Eagles softball team split a pair of games at the Gulf Shores Invitational on Saturday hosted by Mobile University. WBU defeated Point 8-0 in game one before falling to Oklahoma Wesleyan 5-1 in game two.

Madyson Shoebottom and Kennedy Johnson provided the offensive spark in game one as both hit home runs and drove in three RBIs each.

Shoebottom helped the Lady Eagles (11-3) extend their to 2-0 in the third inning with a solo home run down the leftfield line and then followed in the fourth inning with an infield single to plate the game's third run. She added an RBI single in the fifth inning that extended the lead to 5-0

Johnson put an emphatic bow on the offensive explosion by Williams with a 3-run home run in the fifth inning that put her squad up by eight runs.

Laila Byas started things off for Williams Baptist in the second inning when she drew a bases loaded walk to plate the game's first run and Maddie Althenthal scored on a dropped fly ball by the right fielder in the fifth inning for the game's other two runs.

Emberlin Caldwell was dominant inside the circle in four innings of work. She allowed just one runner to reach base on a walk and added six strikeouts before giving way to Maddie Wallace who pitched the fifth inning.

In game two, both teams were scoreless until the fourth inning when Oklahoma Wesleyan put up four runs to break the deadlock. OWU scored the first run of the game with an RBI single and followed with a 2-Run double and a 2-run single to quickly go up 5-0.

WBU got a run back in the bottom half of the inning when Johnson scored on a sacrifice fly by Alenthal, but the Lady Eagles left the bases loaded that inning and would not threaten again in the game.

Williams continues its swing through the state of Alabama with a doubleheader matchup at Stillman in Tuscaloosa, Ala., on Monday, March 4. First pitch is set for Noon.
