Slow shooting day halts Women’s Basketball against UT Southern on the road

PULASKI, Tenn. (Feb. 10, 2024) - The Point University Women's Basketball team returned to the court for a Southern States Athletic Conference road matchup against the University of Tennessee Southern where the Skyhawks fell to the Firehawks with a final score of 52-41. 

The first quarter began with Mataea Boyd adding the first score for the Skyhawks but UT Southern responded with a 10-0 run to end the period leading 12-2. Mataea Boyd added the first two scores of the second period to get the Skyhawks' offense going. Lanee Edwards and Ananda Hughley followed with a layup and three-pointer from Hughley to bring Point's deficit to four. Point continued to find scoring opportunities as Ky'Leo Worriels powered through the paint for a layup. Mataea Boyd ended the half with a three-pointer to bring the score 26-17 with UT Southern leading at the half. 

Ananda Hughley opened the second half with a three-pointer to halt an 8-0 run from UT Southern and Lanee Edwards followed with an and-one layup. The Skyhawks continued to push for a comeback in the third quarter as Point cut the Firehawk lead to 10 as Jada Williams converted a three-pointer and Ky'Leo Worriels scored on the layup. UT Southern came into the fourth quarter with a 39-28 lead and opened with an 8-2 run. Destinee Ellison added a layup which was followed by a three-pointer from Antonia Pittman to bring the score to 49-36. Destinee Ellison finished with the final scores of the game as she added two free throws and a three-pointer to end the game with Point falling 52-41.

Mataea Boyd led with 10 Points, one steal, and one assist. Destinee Ellison followed with seven points, one rebound, and one assist.
