Men’s Basketball fall to the Firehawks in weekend SSAC Play

WEST POINT, Ga. (Jan. 6, 2024) - The Point University Men's Basketball team returned to action in a Saturday afternoon Southern States Athletic Conference matchup against the University of Tennessee Southern in the West Point Park Gymnasium where the Skyhawks fell 75-50. 

The first half began with Justice Hayes opening with the first score of the game as he splashed a three-pointer to take the early lead. Joshua Scott followed with his signature jump hook in the paint to boost past the Firehawk defender. The SSAC Opponents continued to trade baskets with the lead changing sides four times in the first eight minutes. UT Southern climbed back into the lead but the Skyhawks did not shy away as Justice Hayes attacked the paint for a scored layup to bring to the score to 15-14 with the Firehawks in front. Point regained the lead as Mike Evans scored on the following two possessions. UT Southern wiped away the lead to keep the momentum on their side through the first half. John Williams' court vision was put on display as he connected with Robert Kendrick for the three-pointer to trail 24-23 with two minutes left. The Firehawks responded with two consecutive triples to lead 30-26 at the half. 

Sam Rees got the second going with a mid-range jump shot over his defender. UT Southern retaliated by going on a 9-0 run before a timeout was called. Jeremiah Smith and Robert Kendrick would score on the following two offensive possessions to halt the run from UT Southern with hopes of bringing the momentum back on their end. The Firehawks continued to stretch their lead before John Williams added his mid-range jumper for the Skyhawks. UT Southern's defense would force multiple steals to take their lead to 61-42 and begin a hot streak of shooting along the way. John Williams ended the 14-2 run from UT Southern by converting on free throws and adding a three-pointer. Cameron Wickline would follow with a strong take to the lane to add another layup. The Skyhawks would score their final basket on a free throw as the Firehawks took the win 75-50. 

In the Box 

Mike Evans led 10 Points, three rebounds, and three assists. Robert Kendrick followed with nine points, three rebounds and two assists off the bench. John Williams added eight points three rebounds and three assists.

The Skyhawks will continue their homestand as the Point welcomes Brewton-Parker College for an SSAC Matchup on Wednesday, January 13 at the West Point Park Gymnasium starting at 7:30 P.M.
