Point Football falls to Union in road AAC Matchup

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. (Oct. 14, 2023) - The Point University Football team returned to action for an Appalachian Athletic Conference matchup against Union College, where the Bulldogs prevailed past Point for a 20-13 win.

Point's first offensive drive in the first quarter set the stage for a light at the end of the tunnel as the rushing attack helped the Skyhawks drive the ball, resulting in a 15-yard rushing touchdown from Mitchell Gossett. The PAT Field Goal from Matthew Moses was good, which put the Skyhawks ahead 7-0. Union could not respond on the following as Point's defense forced the three-and-out. The Bulldogs' defense started to pick up steam as Union created stops on the following two drives to end the first quarter trailing 7-0.

At the beginning of the second quarter, Union brought the game back in their favor as the Bulldogs surged to the endzone for a one-yard rush, which resulted in a touchdown. The PAT Field Goal tied the game 7-7. On offense, Point started to drive the ball in Bulldog territory, which resulted in the Skyhawks getting on the goal line. Union's defense could hold Point to three points as the Skyhawks regained the lead with a 10-7 score. As the quarter continued, the Skyhawks had Union out of the endzone on the next drive, with the Bulldogs missing a game-tying field goal. However, Union recovered a fumble on the defensive end, resulting in a 10-yard touchdown from the Bulldogs to take the lead 14-10. The Skyhawks took the field on offense, where Point drove the ball into a field goal, which brought the game within one point as Matthew Moses made his second field goal of the day for a 14-13 score going into the half.

Caleb Wade started the third quarter with an interception to put Point's offense back on the field for an opportunity to take the lead. On the following drive, two rushes for four yards by D'Ontae Eatmon gave Point an opportunity for another field goal. The attempt would be missed, which possession back to Union. The Bulldogs' passing game played as the narrative for the following drive, but before Union could have an opportunity to fight for a score, Kemorion Larkin came off the edge for a sack on fourth down. The defensive showdown continued as Union forced a fumble on the following drive to gain possession back in the game. Union looked to get a spark going, but tackles from Kemrion Larkin and Ethan Binns, incomplete passes from Union, and a Quarterback hurry from Cortez Thomas forced Union to punt. With Brenton White now subbed in as the signal caller, White completed two big passes, but the plays were wiped out due to penalties. The Bulldogs' defense would be able to force another as Union led by one going into the final period of play.

Union started the fourth with an ample opportunity as the Bulldogs intercepted a pass from Brenton White, which resulted in a pick-six to have Union lead 20-13. The following drive saw the Skyhawks' quick game in the air be successful as White completed consecutive passes to Kareem Keye, Emery Bryant, and Wesley Jones. Point continued to drive the field with rushes from Trey Inge III, but on third down on Union's seven-yard line, the Bulldogs intercepted their second pass of the evening. As the Bulldogs took the field on offense, Union looked to drive the ball with hopes of running out the clock, but the Skyhawks created stops, which gave the Skyhawks one last shot to score on offense. Union's secondary would hold on to force incomplete passes to take the win 20-13 over Point.
