Union picks up a 20-13 win on Homecoming

Barbourville, Ky. – The Union College football team picked up a 20-13 Homecoming victory on Saturday over Point.

"Well, I'm extremely happy and just proud of our kids for the effort," Union head coach John Luttrell said after the game. "I am so happy for our young men. They do things the right way. They deserve this, and I couldn't be more proud of them than what I am right now."

Union's first touchdown of the game occurred with 11:47 to play in the second quarter. It occurred on a one-yard run for Walker Russell via a QB sneak. Following the extra point by Dustin Brown; the score was tied 7-7.

Point countered on the ensuing possession with a field goal. Later in the quarter, Union's Jaylin Bybee forced a fumble that was recovered by the Bulldogs' Paul Maxwell at Point's 31-yard line.

The Bulldogs would score with a 10-yard TD pass from Walker Russell to Quinn Carter to give Union a 14-10 lead with 2:27 to play in the first half. Russell finished the game 14-of-29 for 141 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. At halftime, Union led 14-13.

The only score of the second half occurred early in the fourth quarter when Union LB Noah Steen had a 52-yard interception return for a touchdown that gave the Bulldogs a 20-13 lead.

With 1:33 to play in the fourth quarter, Point took over at the Union 23-yard line following a 31-yard punt return. Union's defense prevented the Skyhawks from scoring as Point threw four consecutive incompletions. The defensive stand secured a 20-13 win for Union.

Byron Gee led all players in total tackles with 13, which included two TFLs and 1.5 sacks. Union LB Noah Steen recorded 12 total tackles, 1.5 TFL, the 52-yard pick six, and two pass breakups.

Union's defense recorded six sacks, three forced and recovered fumbles, seven pass breakups, and two interceptions.

The Bulldogs are now 3-4 (2-1 AAC) this season, while Point is also 3-4 (2-1 AAC). Union is on a bye next week. The Bulldogs play at No. 23 Reinhardt in Union's next game on Saturday, Oct. 28, at 1:30 p.m.
