Point Volleyball bolsters past William Carey for a sweep

WEST POINT, Ga. (Oct. 14, 2023) - The Point University Volleyball team returned to the court for a Saturday afternoon Southern States Athletic Conference matchup against William Carey University at the West Point Park Gymnasium, where the Skyhawks took the 3-0 sweep against the Crusaders. 

Set One (25-19, Win) 

The Crusaders started the set with a 3-1 lead, quickly turning into the Skyhawks, adding four consecutive scores to take the lead 5-3. William Carey retaliated by going 6-1 run to regain the lead. The Skyhawks matched the energy as Claire Cordell jumped out of the gym with a kill to halt the run from William Carey. An error from the Crusaders, a service ace from Aaliyah Lobendahn, and a kill from Claire Cordell helped the Skyhawks regain the lead with their momentum. The Crusaders continued to fight back in the driver's seat for momentum, which helped bring the score to 17-13. The Skyhawks' fierce competitive nature helped spark a 6-0 run with two kills from Jadakate Judkins, a service ace from Sameily Marquez, a kill from Claire Cordell, and errors from William Carey. Point continued to raise the bar as Paieg Lowe and Tianna Kynard scored with their kills, capitalizing off errors from the Crusaders. Claire Cordell sealed the deal on the first set with back-to-back kills for Point. 

Set Two (26-24, Win) 

The momentum for Point carried into the second set as the Skyhawks started with an 8-3 lead. Claire Cordell's big day continued as she added the following kills for Point. William Carey responded with a kill, but Tianna Kynard returned with a kill to push the lead to four, followed by a service Ace from Jordan Palmer. Despite the Crusaders pushing for a comeback, Point continued to extend their lead as Jadakate Judkins and Claire Cordell tallied the following two kills. Aaliyah Lobendahn followed with a kill of her, and Jordan Palmer's service saw Point lead 20-16. William Carey fought their way by trading scores with Point which tied the set at 24. Two errors from the Crusaders helped Point take the second set with a score of 26-24.  

Set Three (25-16, Win) 

Sameily Marquez started the set with two kills, followed by a block from Jadakate Judkins and Aaliyah Lobendahn. The eye-for-eye start played a key role at the beginning of the set as both teams would trade scores to see the set tied at seven. Sameily Marquez wiped the tie away with four consecutive kills. The run continued with an error from William Carey, a kill from Jadakate Judkins, and a service ace from Jordan Palmer. Sameily Marquez's fiery attack continued to push the Skyhawks further as she sprang for the following two kills. William Carey fired back with three consecutive scores, but two errors pushed Point's lead to 20-15. Tianna Kynard and Sameily Marquez helped the Skyhawks get closer to the finish line with their successful offensive kills. A service ace from Jordan Palmer and an attack error from William Carey gave the Skyhawks a sweep. 

In the Box 

Sameily Marquez and Claire Cordell each led Point with 14 kills a piece. Marquez added nine digs and a service ace to go with her performance. Cordell added five digs and a block to add to hers. Paige Lowe finished with 34 assists on the evening while adding five digs. Jordan Palmer led with 13 digs and four service aces.
