Volleyball takes down the Knights in a sweep at home

WEST POINT, Ga. (Sept. 9, 2023) - The Point University Volleyball team returned to the court for an afternoon home Southern States matchup against Middle Georgia State University, where the Skyhawks swept the Knights. 

Set One (25-23, Win) 

The first set started with both teams going back and forth as both teams tried to take advantage of gaining momentum off one another. With the score tied at 11, Jadakate Judkins jumped out of the gym with a kill, followed by another from Ava Clay. The Knights retaliated with a 4-0 run to take the lead by three, but the Skyhawks struck gold with a run of their own. Sameily Marquez started the run with a kill, followed by a block from Tianna Kynard and Paige Lowe. Aaliyah Lobendahn picked up where she left off by finding the perfect spot for the kill, which caused Middle Georgia to take a timeout to regroup. Following the timeout, the Knights took the following three scores before their run was halted by a service error to have the score tied at 22. Point added the next two scores, with Jadakate Judkins taking the kill, followed by the service ace from Paige Lowe. The attack error from Middle Georgia ended the first set with Point winning 25-23. 

Set Two (25-15, Win) 

The second set started with the Skyhawks bringing their momentum with a quick 4-1 start. Middle Georgia added two scores, but Aaliyah Lobendahn and Jadakate Judkins responded with attacks to extend the lead further for Point. Ava Clay and Tianna Kynard contributed to the Skyhawks' offensive attack by adding some steam with their kills. The Knights fought back to bring their deficit within three, but the Skyhawks continued to make the comeback challenging. Jadakate Judkins added another score for Point with more success following as Lexi Arter added a service ace to her stat line as the Skyhawks led 19-12. Tianna Kynard continued to show her value by outdueling the Knights with their young talent as she tacked another kill, followed by the service ace from Emma Parker. A kill from Sameily Marquez, a ball handling error from the Knights, and a bad set from Middle Georgia helped the Skyhawks the set with a 25-15 score. 

Set Three (25-21, Win) 

The third set started with both teams scoring back-to-back until three attack errors and a service ace from Aaliyah Lobendahn helped the Skyhawks take the lead by one. Tianna Kynard and Sameily Marquez continued to bring the heat against Middle Georgia as their kills extended the score Point. After the kill from Middle Georgia, the Skyhawks took the 4-0 run with kills from Sameily Marquez, Paige Lowe, and Aaliyah Lobendahn. Claire Cordell also added a service ace within the run, which helped her continue to climb the record books for career service aces. As Point picked up some steam with a 16-10 lead, the Knights climbed their way back with an 8-2 run to trail 20-17, hoping to avoid the sweep. Paige Lowe halted the run as she earned a kill, and the Skyhawks followed with a dominating way to end the set. Point end set three on a 4-0 run as Tianna Kynard and Aaliyah Lobendahn secured the block, followed by a service ace from Jordan Palmer. Jadakate Judkins and Aaliyah Lobendahn closed the match in style with two strong kills as the Skyhawks secured their second consecutive sweep in SSAC Play. 

In the Box 

Aaliyah Lobendahn led with 11 kills and 12 digs for the Skyhawks. Sameily Marquez followed with 10 kills and three digs. Jadakate Judkins contributed with seven kills and two blocks. Jordan Palmer led the team with 17 digs and added two service aces. Paige Lowe was the assist leader with 33 and added 10 digs.

The Skyhawks will return to action on the road in Montgomery, Alabama, for a Southern States Athletic Conference Matchup against Faulkner University on Saturday, September 16th, starting at 2:00 P.M. Eastern.
