Point at Huntingdon ends early due to lightning; Skyhawks fall 15-7

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (March 30, 2022) – The Point University women's lacrosse team traveled and played Huntingdon (Ala.) Wednesday evening, but lightning caused the game to get called early in the fourth quarter with Huntingdon leading 15-7.

The Skyhawks got out to an early lead to start Wednesday's contest, following back-to-back goals from Kaelyn Geathers and Sydney Hanna. The Hawks would cut Point's lead in half with a goal three minutes later, but Victoria Cortes would extend Point's lead, 3-1. With 8:53 remaining, the Hawks connected for back-to-back goals to even the score at three. Janie Marie Messer would help the Skyhawks retake the lead with her first goal of the season, but with four seconds remaining in the quarter, Huntingdon would tie the game once again (4-4).

In the second quarter, the Hawks would take a 10-5 lead with six goals and limit Point to one. The Hawks would open the quarter with a goal before Kelli Grimsley followed, tying the game for the third time (5-5). In the third quarter, Huntingdon opened the frame with four goals before Geathers connected for her second goal with 32 seconds remaining (14-6).

Grimsley would score her second goal to open the fourth quarter, but Huntingdon would answer less than a minute later to retake an eight-goal lead (15-7). This would be the final play of the contest, as the game was called due to lightning following Huntingdon's goal.

Point's seven goals came off 20 shots, 11 on frame. Geathers and Grimsley led the way with two goals apiece. Geathers had 10 shots, four on goal and two groundballs. Grimsley took five shots, four on frame and two groundballs. Hanna and Messer's goals were their only shots of the game and Cortes took three shots, one on frame and recorded two groundballs. In goal, Kayla Bone had 10 saves and four groundballs.

Up next, Point will be back in action tomorrow as they travel to face Appalachian Athletic Conference foe Brenau at 5 p.m. at Duncan Park in Dacula, Ga.
