Women’s Basketball unable to soar past the Running Eagles at home

WEST POINT, Ga. (Jan. 24, 2024) - The Point University Women's Basketball team returned to the court at the West Point Park Gymnasium for a Wednesday night Southern States Athletic Conference matchup against Life University where the Skyhawks fell 59-51. 

Jhakia Gist started the game for the Skyhawks with a strong take to the lane to get Point on the scoreboard. Life countered with a 13-3 run to open the quarter. Mataea Boyd's layup would help the Skyhawks cut their deficit to nine points. Point started to shake off the rust in the second quarter as Mataea Boyd and Shanbriah Rule scored the first points of the period. Boyd followed with a three-pointer to bring Life's lead to five. The Skyhawks continued to chip away at Life's lead with Antonia Pittman and Mataea Boyd adding the energy with consecutive layups. Point brought the lead within two with another score in the paint but the Runnings Eagles responded by ending the quarter on a 8-0 run to lead 28-20 at the half. 

The third quarter opened with Ky'Leo Worriels crashing the offensive boards off her miss for a strong layup. Life brought their lead back to double digits with consecutive scores to bring the score to 34-24. As Point looked to climb back, Antonia Pittman wiped away the run from the Running Eagles with a deep three ball which was followed by a layup from Mataea Boyd. Life added fuel to the fire by adding their biggest lead of the game as they extended the lead to 46-33. Shakira Wilson would score the final triple of the quarter on the quick catch and shoot to trail by 10 going into the final period.  

Point opened the quarter with a three-pointer from Mataea Boyd which was followed by a layup from Shakira Wilson to cut into Life's lead with a score of 50-41. The Skyhawks continued to look to find their groove on the offensive end which paid dividends as Mirial Cannon was found with enough space for the triple as Point trailed 53-46. Life continued to hold their lead by scoring the following two baskets to reignite their double-digit lead. Ananda Hughley was found wide open in the corner for a made jumper which was assisted by Mataea Boyd. Point would score their last two points from the charity stripe but would fall 59-51. 

In the Box 

Mataea Boyd led with 19 Points, six rebounds, four steals, and two blocks. Antonia Pittman followed with nine points, two assists, and two steals. Mirial Cannon added seven points and two rebounds.
