Late comeback not enough to surge past Mobile in road SSAC Play

MOBILE, Ala. (Jan. 20, 2024) - The Point University Women's Basketball team returned to the court for a road Southern States Athletic Conference matchup against the University of Mobile where the Skyhawks fell 67-54. 

Ky'Leo Worriels got the game going with the score as Antonia Pittman connected with her in the paint. The Skyhawks continued to get their offense flowing by converting from the free throw line which was followed by Jhakia Gist knocking down a three-pointer. The Skyhawks' shooting continued to follow through as Mirial Cannon converted on the following two jumper with one being a three-pointer and another being a layup to bring the score to 12-9. Mobile would respond to the following score from Lanee Edwards to end the quarter with a tie game at 14. 

The second quarter opened with Ky'Leo Worriels wiping Mobile's lead away with a layup to tie the game again. Worriels continued to hold down the fort with another layup to regain the lead. Both teams continued to trade scores until the Rams took the following two baskets to lead by four. Point took the lead again with Jhakia Gist and Jada Williams scoring the following two for the Skyhawks to bring the score to 27-25. Mobile came out of their timeout by ending the first half with momentum to lead 34-33 at the half. 

The third quarter opened with the Rams scoring going on an 11-4 run to lead 47-38 in the early going. Mirial Cannon fired back with the following two layups in the paint to cut Mobile's lead to five. The Skyhawks looked to halt another run from Mobile as Cannon added a step-back jumper at the top of the key to end the third quarter with the Rams leading 51-44. Point opened the final period with Ky'Leo Worriels scoring off her offensive rebound for the putback layup. The Rams responded by scoring on the following two offensive possessions. Point continued to try to chip at Mobile's lead which saw some life as Antonia Pittman converted on the and-one layup along with a free throw. Jhakia Gist's layup brought the game to 58-53 as Point continued to find ways to keep the game within reach. Mobile would allow one more point as the Rams finished the game on a 9-1 run to win the game 67-54.

Ky'Leo Worriels led with 14 Points, nine rebounds, and four blocks. Mirial Cannon followed with 11 Points, eight rebounds, and one block. Jhakia Gist added 10 Points and two rebounds.
