Women’s Basketball winning streak snapped at Faulkner in road SSAC Play

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (Jan. 13, 2024) - The Point University Women's Basketball team returned to the court in a battle of defending conference champions for a road Saturday afternoon Southern States Athletic Conference matchup against Faulkner University where the Skyhawks fell 72-58. 

The Skyhawks got on the scoreboard with a jumper from Shanbriah Rule which was followed by a score from Mirial Cannon to tie the game at four. Point took their first lead with two made free throws from Antonia Pittman but the Eagles would convert on a three-pointer to regain their lead in the early going. The Skyhawks continued to keep a rhythm going on the offensive end as Mirial Cannon and Ky'Leo Worriels scored the following two baskets for Point. The Skyhawks ended the first quarter by scoring their final baskets from Mataea Boyd and Ananda Hughley as Faulkner led 22-16 to go into the second quarter.  

Shakira Wilson got the second quarter going with her quick-release three-pointer which was nothing but net for the first score of the period. Faulkner responded with a 10-2 run before Mataea Boyd's free throws halted the run and brought the game back within single digits. Chinedu Nnadi entered the fray with a steal and fastbreak layup for a quick score. Point followed with Shakira Wilson's second triple of the game to bring the score to 34-29 with 2:02 remaining. Faulkner would go into the half converting on another triple to lead 37-29 at halftime.  

Mirial Cannon scored the first three baskets of the third quarter for Point which brought the game within three points in the third quarter. Point continued to creep closer to the lead of Faulkner as Ky'Leo Worriels' layup brought Faulkner's lead to 39-38. The Eagles responded by going on an 11-0 run to bring their lead back within double digits. Shanbriah Rule scored the final bucket of the quarter as the Skyhawks trailed 53-40 to go into the final period of play. 

Ky'Leo Worriels scored the first two layups of the quarter with hopes of pushing the team to a comeback but the shooting of Faulkner continued to extend their lead further. Point continued to find ways to score as the following six points came triples from Mirial Cannon and Lanee Edwards. Antonia Pittman, Lanee Edwards, Ky'Leo Worriels, and Mirial Cannon scored the final eight points for the Skyhawks as Point dropped the matchup on the road with a final score of 72-58.

Mirial Cannon led with 19 Points, eight rebounds, three assists, and four blocked shots. Ky'Leo Worriels followed with 10 Points, 13 Rebounds, and three blocked shots.
