Women’s Basketball shows fight as the Skyhawks drop road matchup to Columbus State

COLUMBUS, Ga. (Dec. 30, 2023) - The Point University returned to the court after their Christmas break for a nonconference exhibition game against NCAA Division II, Columbus State University where the Skyhawks fought until the end but would fall 75-69. 

Ky'Leo Worriels got the Skyhawks going by making her first jump shot and adding the first score for the Skyhawks. Point's offense continued to look to match Columbus State as Shanbriah Rule added a layup for the Skyhawks to trail 15-4 in the early going. Rule followed with a three-pointer and Mataea Boyd added an and-one layup along with a made free throw as the Skyhawks moved Columbus State's lead to single digits. Two more free throws from Boyd and another layup added to Point's 10-2 run as the Skyhawks now trailed 17-14 with under four minutes in the first period. Shanbriah Rule and Ky'Leo Worriels added two more scores as Rule converted on the three-point play followed by a layup from Worriels. Point ended the quarter trailing 27-20 as Ananda Hughley added a free throw for the final score for the Skyhawks.  

Mataea Boyd brought the Cougars' lead to three points as she converted on the following two layups and two free throws. Point took their first lead as Mirial Cannon scored in the paint for the layup and followed with a triple for the Skyhawks to be ahead by two. Antonia Pittman was in a gift-giving mood as she connected on the assist to Shanbriah Rule which put the Skyhawks back ahead after a Columbus State layup. Point's energy continued to feed through the gymnasium as Mirial Cannon converted on the and-one jump shot and converted the free throw to tie the game at 36. Cannon continued to open her bag on offense by breezing past the defense for the layup but the Cougars responded with two triples to lead 42-38 at the half.  

Columbus State opened the third quarter scoring the first six points but the Skyhawks fired back as Mirial Cannon scored the following six points for Point. Shanbriah Rule and Mataea Boyd followed with scores but the Cougars continued to hold their lead with the score at 60-48. Point would not be too far behind as a free throw from Ky'Leo Worriels and a layup from Mataea Boyd had the Skyhawks trailing by nine going into the final period of play.  

Columbus State brought the game back to double digits by opening the fourth quarter leading 71-58 but the fight kicked in at the perfect time for Point. The following six points belonged to Point as Mirial Cannon, Shanbriah Rule, and Mataea Boyd each attacked the paint to convert on their layups. With the Cougars leading 73-64, Mirial Cannon splashed the three-pointer with under two minutes left to creep in on the lead of Columbus State. Ky'Leo Worriels added another layup to trail by six but the Cougars were able to hold on to win 75-69. 

In the Box 

Mirial Cannon led with a double-double as she had 23 Points, 11 Rebounds, two steals, and one blocked shot. Mataea Boyd added 17 Points, four rebounds, and one steal. Shanbriah Rule was not far behind with 16 Points and two assists.
