Women’s Basketball holds off the Rams for a home SSAC win

WEST POINT, Ga. (Dec. 2, 2023) - The Point University Women's Basketball team returned to the court for a Saturday afternoon Southern States Athletic Conference matchup against the University of Mobile where the Skyhawks took the win 61-51. 

Antonia Pittman got the first quarter going with a layup to respond to the Rams' jumping on the scoreboard first as she converted a layup. After Pittman's free throws, Mobile regained the lead after hitting the three-point shot to have the early 5-4 lead. Both teams continued to get settled on the court as the conference foes traded the following six baskets. The Skyhawks kept their energy by ending the first quarter with the lead as Mataea Boyd and Antonia Pittman scored the last two layups. 

Ky'Leo Worriels took the first score of the second quarter as Mirial Cannon connected with Worriels in the post. Point continued to have successful trips down the court on offense as Lanee Edwards scored through the lane for the layup. The Skyhawks held their lead as Mataea Boyd scored the next two baskets with a three-pointer and a layup to bring Point's lead 24-19. Mobile brought the game within two points as the Rams converted on the following three-pointer. With Point leading by one point from the Rams' layup, Lanee Edwards helped stretch the Skyhawks' lead further as she splashed a three-pointer to have Point going into the half leading 28-24. 

Mataea Boyd opened the third quarter with a jump shot which was followed by the quickness of Antonia Pittman to make the following layup. Point went on a 9-0 run as Antonia Pittman continued to put pressure on the Rams' defense by scoring in the lane on two layups to lead 37-24. The Skyhawks' defense continued to hold their own as Point went the first seven minutes without giving up a score before the Rams hit their first three-pointer at the 3:02 mark. Point's offense did not slow down as the next three scores belonged to Point with a layup from Mataea Boyd and three-point bombs from Shakira Wilson and Lanee Edwards to end the quarter with a 48-32 lead. 

Mataea Boyd used her strength through the lane to score the first layup of the fourth quarter which was followed by two free throws from the charity stripe. Mirial Cannon pushed the Skyhawks' lead to 21 as she scored on a three-pointer. Ky'Leo Worriels and Lanee Edwards scored the final baskets for Point as the late 11-0 run Mobile was not enough to move past Point which gave the Skyhawks the 61-51 win. 

In the Box 

Mataea Boyd led with 18 Points, eight rebounds, four steals, and one block. Antonia Pittman followed with 12 Points, four rebounds, and one assist. Lanee Edwards added 10 Points and two made three-pointers. The Skyhawks' impact on the boards was key in today's victory as Mirial Cannon led with 13 Rebounds and Ky'Leo Worriels followed with 12 Rebounds.  

Coach's Quote 

Head Coach, Tory Wooley was pleased with how his team earned the win and played with grit. "I'm proud of the fight and grit our players played with." We dominated the boards and our team did a great job on the defensive side of the ball limiting their scoring opportunities." Wooley also mentioned how the tempo of the game was all in Point's favor. "Antonia and Shanbriah did a superb job controlling the tempo of the game and Lanee and Shakira played well hitting key shots off the bench. Senior Leader Mataea played well and this was a great team win for our program."

Point will turn their focus to Wednesday, December 6th as the Skyhawks prepare for the battle of Troup Country where the Skyhawks take on Lagrange College in Lagrange, Georgia starting at 5:30 P.M.
