Women’s Basketball falls to Life in SSAC Opener

MARIETTA, Ga. (Nov. 15, 2023) -The Point University Women's Basketball team traveled to Marietta to take on Life University for a Wednesday night matchup in their Southern States Athletic Conference opener where the Skyhawks fell 77-73.  

Ky'Leo Worriels got the game going with a layup to score the first basket of the game. After Life's response, Shakira Wilson added a three-pointer to regain the lead and Ky'Leo Worriels followed with another layup. Point's lead grew as Mataea Boyd scored on the three-point bomb which was followed by a jump shot from Ky'Leo Worriels to bring the score 12-2. The hot start did not stop there as Mataea Boyd added two more triples. The Skyhawks continued to keep their lead and produce a successful run as the Skyhawks led 22-10. The second quarter saw the Running Eagles regroup as they responded to a three-pointer from Antonia Pittman. With the Skyhawks now leading 31-19, the Running Eagles put together a 12-0 run to end the half with a 32-31 lead at the break. 

Ky'Leo Worriels got the second half started with two made free throws to put the Skyhawks ahead by one. Life regained the lead but the Skyhawks continued to keep the game as Ananda Hughley splashed a contested three-pointer to bring the score to 40-38 with Life ahead. The Running Eagles continued to keep their lead intact by extending the deficit with a three-pointer. Ky'Leo Worriels brought the score to 49-45 as she powered through the lane for the layup. Life's plan of taking the momentum away from Point was still the plan as the Running Eagles started the fourth quarter with a layup and jump shot. Shakira Wilson cut the lead to 55-53 with a backdoor layup but Life would respond with a quick score the bring the lead within four. Shakira Wilson timed the steal right on time as she finished with a fastbreak layup to tie the game at 57. Life wiped the tie away with a three-pointer and a layup to follow. Ky'Leo Worriels continued to put up big numbers she crashed the offensive boards for a putback layup. Life looked to continue to hold their lead by a layup from Antonia Pittman and a three-pointer from Shakira Wilson instilled hope of a comeback with the score being 71-67 with under a minute left. Life converted their final five free throws to win 77-73.

Ky'Leo Worriels led with 18 Points, 12 Rebounds, and one assist. Shakira Wilson followed with 15 Points and four steals. Mataea Boyd added 15 Points, four rebounds and one steal.

The Skyhawks will return to the court for a non-conference matchup against Truett McConnell University at the West Point Park Gymnasium starting at 1:00 P.M.
