Women's basketball drops AAC matchup against Montreat

WEST POINT, Ga. (Nov. 12, 2022) - The Point University women's basketball team returned to action Saturday afternoon at the West Point Rec Gym for their Appalachian Athletic Conference game versus Montreat College and fall 66-50.

The Montreat Cavaliers started the scoring in the game with a layup by Adrianna Gullette at the 9:36 mark. The Skyhawks got their scoring started by a layup from Ananda Hughley to tie the game at the 9:11 mark in the first quarter. Starting with a made shot by Hughley at the 5:53 mark to tie the game up at 8-8. The Skyhawks would find themselves on a 6-0 run to end the first quarter up 18-13. The Skyhawks got the scoring started in the second quarter with a made layup by Marta Gimenez to push the lead to 20-13 at the 9:34. Moving forward in the first half, Sheyvonne Owens would get fouled and head to the line to shoot two shots. Owens would make both shots and improve the Skyhawks lead to 32-26. After a foul from Mirial Cannon, the Cavaliers' would have Mariya Williams go to the free throw line to shoot two. Williams would go 1-2 at the line to move the game to 32-27 lead, in favor of the Skyhawks. At the end of the first half, it was Skyhawks 32-27.

The third quarter scoring got started by a layup from Ananda Hughley at the 9:27 mark which would make it 34-27 Skyhawks. Montreat would make the game all tied up at the 4:39 mark on the shot of Triniti Lockhardt. The Skyhawks would answer right back with a shot mad by Ky'Leo Worriels, assist by Mataea Boyd to make it a 39-37 game. The Cavaliers would finish the third quarter on a 10-0 run to take the lead at 47-39. The fourth quarter started just like the third quarter ended, with Montreat going on another run to make it 54-39 with 7:02 left to play in the contest. After a Skyhawks turnover at the 3:31 mark, the Cavaliers would take advantage of it with a layup from Virginia Edmonson, assist by Makayla Thompson to make it a 61-43 game. With under a minute left in the game, the Skyhawks were able to make 2 more shots. A three pointer from Chinedu Nnadi, assist by Kyra Hart and a layup from Sheyvonne Owens. Those two shots were not enough, as Montreat would leave West Point with the 66-50 victory.

Both Mataea Boyd (12 points) and Ananda Hughley (11 points) both found themselves in the stat sheet with double digit performances. Marta Gimenez lead the team in assists with eight. Mirial Cannon lead the team with seven rebounds in the contest.
