Point Softball splits on Day One at the SSAC Tournament

DECATUR, Ala. (May 2, 2024) - The Point University Softball team returned to the field for Day One of the Southern States Athletic Conference Softball Tournament where the Skyhawks took on UT Southern and Middle Georgia State University. Point took the first game from UT Southern with a final score of 2-1 and dropped their second game against Middle Georgia with a final score of 6-2. 

Game One vs. UT Southern (2-1, Win) 

The Firehawks opened the bottom of the second inning with a single to right center which advanced a runner home to take the lead for their first run. Point responded with Brooke Burkett adding a double to left center which saw Mackenzie Diaz sprint home to tie the game at 1-1. Tia Coleman followed with an RBI single down the left field line which was enough for Brooke Burkett to score a run which put the Skyhawks in the lead. Defensively, Point only allowed one hit after the fourth inning which was enough to defeat the Firehawks with a final score of 2-1. Katelyn Jiles pitched a complete game and struck out four batters to win in the circle. 

Game Two vs. Middle Georgia (6-2, Loss) 

The action picked up with Brooke Burkett adding a single up the middle for the first hit of the top of the third inning. Tia Coleman followed with a base hit to center field to put Middle Georgia in a bind. Savanna Bryant added a double down the left-field line which was enough to add two runs and take the lead. Middle Georgia responded in the bottom of the inning by adding six runs through a single, a double, and two fielding errors. The Skyhawks were held to only one hit to finish the game with a final score of 6-2.

The Skyhawks will return to the field for an Elimination game against Stillman College on Day Two of the SSAC Tournament starting at 10:00 A.M.
