Point Softball drops SSAC Opener to Middle Georgia in a sweep

WEST POINT, Ga. (Feb. 23, 2024) - The Point University Softball team returned to action for a home Southern States Athletic Conference Opener against #16 Middle Georgia State University where the Skyhawks fell to the Knights in a sweep with a final score of 10-2 and 6-0. 

Game One (10-2, Loss) 

Middle Georgia opened the first inning by loading the bases which caused their first run off a walked batter. The Knights followed with a double which scored three runners home to open the gate for a 4-0 lead. Point responded with a single to right field from Tia Coleman which advanced Mary Durham home for their first run. Caylee Quarles followed with a single to right field as well to bring Hannah Phillips home which brought Middle Georgia's lead to 4-2. The Knights continued to roll on the offensive end as a double to center field helped extend their lead to 5-2. Middle Georgia added their second run of the inning as a pitcher to first putout advanced a runner on third base home. Point would string along hits in the next inning but would be unable to add a run as two runners were left on base. Middle Georgia finished game one in five innings as a triple to center field scored two runners home and their last two runs came off a double to win 10-2. 

Game Two (6-0, Loss) 

The Knights opened Game Two by continuing their momentum of hits as their first run came off an RBI Single. Tia Coleman and Caylee Quarles started the Skyhawks off with two hits in the first inning but a chase down to third base would leave two runners left on base. The Knights added two runs in the third inning with one being from a runner advancing home off a hit and another with a homerun. Middle Georgia's lead climbed to 6-0 as the fourth inning saw the Knights add three runs. Point added two hits with Savanna Bryant and Brooke Burkett adding a single. Middle Georgia finished with holding the Skyhawks to zero runs to collect the sweep.

Point will return to the field for their second SSAC home game in West Point Park against Brewton-Parker College starting at 2:00 & 4:00 P.M. on Saturday, February 24th.
