No. 19 men’s tennis defeats Pikeville in season opener

VALLEY, Ala. (Feb. 12, 2022) – The No. 19 Point University men's tennis team hosted the University of Pikeville Saturday afternoon at the Sportsplex in Valley, Alabama, and defeated the Bears 5-2.

Point started with the momentum early, earning victories in every doubles matchup to take a 1-0 lead entering singles. At No. 1 doubles, Guido Luna and Alex Verlaguet won 6-3, at No. 2 doubles, Gavin Thomas and Trey Maust won in a 7-6 (4) tiebreaker, and Santiago Speranza and Brody Millwood won at No. 3 doubles 7-5.

In singles' matches, the Skyhawks earned wins at No. 1, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles to secure the victory. Verlaguet at No. 1 won in three sets, 5-7, 6-4 and 6-3. Maust at No. 4 won 6-2, 6-1, Speranza at No. 5 won 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 and Dakotah Fuller at No. 6 won 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-3.

Up next, the Skyhawks open Appalachian Athletic Conference play as they travel to in-state foe Reinhardt on Friday, Feb. 18, for a 2 p.m. match.
