Swim closes out regular season with home meet

VALLEY, Ala. (Jan. 29, 2022) – The Point University men's and women's swim teams hosted the Point Winter Invite on Saturday at the Sportsplex in Valley.

Both teams finished in third place as the men competed against Emmanuel College and South Georgia State and the women competed against Emmanuel and Columbia College.

Prior to Saturday's meet, the Skyhawks honored their four senior members: Hayley Akbari, Taylor Sturgis, Ben Miller, and Xavier Philips.

Top finishes

  • Nica Pretorius earned 30 points for Point with a fifth-place finish in the 300 freestyle (3:46.84), a 10th place finish in the 50 freestyle (30.04) and a 14th place finish in the 25 butterfly (16.06).
  • Hayley Akbari earned 29 points for Point with a seventh-place finish in the 50 breaststroke (38.06), 12th place finish in the 100 IM (1:24.70), 10th place finish in the 25 butterfly (14.23) and a 12th place finish in the 25 freestyle (13.47).
  • Taylor Sturgis earned 24 points with a 15th place finish in the 25 freestyle (13.69), a ninth-place finish in the 50 butterfly (36.55), a ninth-place finish in the 50 freestyle (28.23) and a 13th place finish in the 25 butterfly (15.00).
  • Out of 34 male swimmers, Jaxon Kite led the men's side with an individual ranking of 18 and earned 49 points. He earned top finishes in the 50 butterfly, finishing fifth with a 24.83 and a seventh-place finish in the 25 butterfly (11.21).
  •  Josiah Blair followed with a 19th place individual ranking, earning 46 points. Blair earned a fourth-place finish in the 50 backstroke and a third-place finish in the 100 backstroke (59.82) to highlight his day.
  • Will Kelly finished individually in 20th place with 45 points. Kelly finished sixth in the 50 breaststroke (28.84), fifth in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.89), and seventh in the 25 breaststroke (13.21)
  • Xavier Philips earned 37 points
  • Jacob Copeland and Rayden Hector earned 30 points each
  • Mitchell Crane earned 25 points
  • Connor Cochran earned 20 points

Saturday was the final meet of the regular season for the Skyhawks. Point will now turn its attention to the Appalachian Athletic Conference Championships in Kingsport, Tennessee, Feb. 10-12.
