Blue Mountain Christian's goal in the 89th minute causes heartbreak on the home pitch

WEST POINT, Ga. (September 30, 2023) – The Point University Men's Soccer team returned to the pitch for a home conference match against Blue Mountain Christian University, where the Skyhawks fell to the Toppers 3-2 on goal in the 89th minute.

First Half

The match began with Callum Thompson taking his position as the goalkeeper for Point, while Alvaro Lopez stood between the sticks for Blue Mountain Christian. The action was intense from the start, with both teams pushing hard for the opening goal. The breakthrough came for Blue Mountain Christian when Daniel Perez netted the first goal of the match. However, Point quickly responded with Brandon Cervantes leveling the score. But before the halftime whistle, Blue Mountain Christian regained their lead with a goal from Jasper Hofland, setting the score at 2-1.

Second Half

The second half witnessed a flurry of action. Point's Jacob Illmer managed to score, tying the game at 2-2. Both teams created numerous chances, with shots hitting the crossbar and posts, while goalkeepers from both ends showcased excellent saves. An intense moment arose when Karim Swedi of Blue Mountain Christian received a yellow card followed by a direct red card, leaving his team with 10 players. The match seemed to be heading for a draw until the final minutes when Daniel Perez of Blue Mountain Christian broke the deadlock, securing his brace and ensuring a 3-2 victory for his team. The match was not without controversy as multiple players from both teams received yellow cards. Despite their spirited effort, Point University's Men's Soccer team narrowly missed out on a positive result.

In the Box

Blue Mountain Christian had a total of 18 shots with Point managing 12. Notably, Brandon Cervantes from Point was the most active with 5 shots, 1 of which was on target and resulted in a goal. Point's goalkeeper, Callum Thompson, made 3 saves throughout the game. Corner Kicks: Blue Mountain Christian led in corner kicks with a total of 7 compared to Point's 5. Blue Mountain Christian committed 11 fouls in total, while Point committed 7. The match also witnessed multiple bookings. Blue Mountain Christian saw 5 yellow cards and a red card, whereas Point received 2 yellow cards. Several Point players clocked the full 90 minutes, including Taylor O'Neill, Zane Whitehead, Ethan Aler, Diogo Palhoto, and Diogo Soucasaux, among others. In the end, despite Point's efforts, Blue Mountain Christian came out on top, adding to Point's challenging season record of 0-9-0.

The Skyhawks will head on the road to Mt. Vernon, Ga. to take on Brewton-Parker on Thursday, October 5. The SSAC match with kickoff at 7:30 P.M.
