Day two comeback helps No. 3 men’s golf to victory at home invitational

LANETT, Ala. (Sept. 12, 2021) – After finishing day one, trailing by six strokes, the No. 3 Point University men's golf team made a day two comeback to claim victory of the Fall Skyhawk Invitational Sunday afternoon.

The Skyhawks' victory came down to the final hole as Point and Truett McConnell were back-and-forth all day. The Skyhawks shot one-under on the 18th hole as a team, while the Bears of TMU were 3-over, helping the Skyhawks to victory. Point finished the tournament with a score of 564, shooting a 284 in round one and a 280 in round two. Point finished 4-under while TMU finished 2-under.

"The team played incredibly," Head Coach Maddux Lytle said. "We did not have our 'A game' as a whole, but they never gave up on themselves or each other. Coming down the stretch, I had no clue where we stood. I just kept telling them to make par and if a birdie or two sneaks in, then great. They kept their composure and got the job done. I am unbelievably proud of each one of our guys."

This weekend's tournament marks Lytle's first victory as the Skyhawks' head coach.

"It did (and still does) feel amazing to get the first win as HC," Lytle said. "The emotions throughout the round cannot be explained and when I found out we had won, I could not have been happier. I give all the credit to the players. They kept their head down and stuck to their game plan. We had a good strategy of just trying to make as many pars as possible today and it paid off. I've truly got a special group here. To have two freshmen come in and fight as they did says a lot about their career ahead. I cannot be more thankful for the opportunity to be here and give God all the praise for today's W!"

The Skyhawks had two teams and two individuals compete in the home invitational. Trevor Poole led the way for Point, finishing individually in first place with a tournament score of 135, shooting 7-under par. He was followed by freshman Dominik Wolf who made his collegiate debut, finishing in seventh place, shooting a 140, 2-under par. Wolf was followed by returning All-American, Cole Stevens who finished in ninth, carding a 144.

Brendan Porter finished in 13th for Point, carding a 146, and freshmen Zandre Labuschagne and Jaden Saunders made their collegiate debut, finishing tied in 14th place with a tournament score of 148.

Ludson Maduro followed in 30th, carding a 154, Matthew Campbell finished in 33rd with a 156, Max Henson finished in 39th with a 160, Logan Gosdin and Hayden Johnson finished 42nd and 43rd and Dawson Smith rounded out the Skyhawks in 45th.

Up next, the Skyhawks will travel to Palm Harbor, Florida, to compete in the Invite at Innisbrook, Sept. 27-28.
