Skyhawks fall to Middle Georgia in an Overtime Buzzer-Beater

COCHRAN, Ga. (Feb. 21, 2024) - The Point University Men's Basketball team returned to the court for their final road game in Southern States Athletic Conference Play against Middle Georgia State where the Skyhawks fell to the Knights in a buzzer-beater in overtime with the final score being 83-81. 

Myles McClain opened the game with the first score as he knocked down a three-pointer. Middle Georgia responded by scoring the following seven points to lead 7-3. Point's offense continued to respond to what was thrown their way as Robert Kendrick knocked down a triple to put the Skyhawks back in the lead. Robert Kendrick continued his hot day by scoring the following eight points for the Skyhawks as Point increased their lead to 20-11. Point continued to ride the hot hand of Kendrick as he added another triple and jump shot. Middle Georgia came climbing back by scoring the following four points. Point continued to hold their lead as Robert Kendrick and Theron Montgomery attacked the paint with a layup to bring the score to 36-27. The Knights ended the first half with some steam by making two shots behind the arc to trail 36-33 at the half.  

Joshua Scott opened the half with a layup to help jumpstart an 11-6 run with the Skyhawks leading by 10. Point continued to feel the heat after as Jacob Crockett knocked down a three-pointer to extend their lead to 54-41. The Knights responded with a 13-0 run to tie the game at 56 and bring within their reach for the lead. Middle Georgia followed with responding to a layup from Joshua Scott by adding a three-pointer to take the lead 61-60. As the Knights added a layup to lead by three, Robert Kendrick tied the game with a three-pointer. As Middle Georgia continued to knock down consistent shots which included a 70-67 lead at 27 seconds, Robert Kendrick proved to be at the right place at the right time to add another triple which sent the game to overtime. 

The overtime period opened with the Knights starting with the first score and the Skyhawks tying the game with two free throws from Jacob Crockett. The charity stripe continued to be used to Point's advantage as the following two scores came from Robert Kendrick. Point took the lead on the following possession as he drove past the defender for the layup to lead 77-75. The Knights proceeded to go on a 6-1 run which included their lead increasing to 81-78 with 50 seconds left. As the Skyhawks looked to tie the game, Robert Kendrick stepped into the big moment again with a game-tying three-pointer to bring the score to 81-81. Middle Georgia took the last possession looking to score on the three-point opportunity but would be unable to convert. The Knights kept the possession alive with an offensive rebound and turn-around mid-range jumper for the game-winner. 

In the Box 

Robert Kendrick led with 37 Points, 10 rebounds, and one steal. Kendrick's 37 Points is sixth all-time in program history for most points scored in a game. Theron Montgomery followed with 13 Points, six rebounds, and three blocks.

The Skyhawks will return to the court for the final time in the 2023-24 campaign to take on SSAC Opponent in Thomas University on Saturday, February 24th at 3:30 P.M. which will also serve as Senior Day.
