Men’s Basketball late comeback halted by the Running Eagles at home

WEST POINT, Ga. (Jan. 24, 2024) - The Point University Men's Basketball team returned to the court for a Wednesday night Southern States Athletic Conference matchup against Life University where the Skyhawks fell 89-71. 

Justice Hayes opened the first half with a three-pointer to put the Skyhawks on the scoreboard first. Theron Montgomery followed with a strong turnaround jump hook in the paint to bring it to 5-0 in the early going. Montgomery continued to push his way through the paint as he was left uncontested for the dunk. After the layup and three-pointer from Sam Rees, the Running Eagles countered with a triple and an and-one layup to tie the game at 13. Life went on a 19-6 run to extend the lead to 33-17 in the first half after a string of hot shooting. Theron Montgomery's layup halted the run which was followed by the floater from John Williams. Life continued to ride the hot hand of Devin Story as their lead grew to a 54-29 lead going into the half. 

John Williams opened the second half for the Skyhawks with a layup and a mid-range jumper. Point continued to show signs of fight as Theron Montgomery continued to dominate in the paint. Justice Hayes followed with a four-point play as he was fouled on the triple and added a free throw. The court vision from John Williams was put on display as he found Kenton Steele wide open in the court for the nothing-but-net three-pointer. Justice Hayes added to the late run with another triple to bring the score to 83-69. The Running Eagles held on to keep their lead intact to win 89-71. 

In the Box 

Theron Montgomery led with 21 Points, 12 Rebounds, and one blocked shot. Justice Hayes followed with 19 Points, four rebounds, and one steal. Sam Rees added 16 Points, four rebounds, and four assists.

Point will return to the court for a Saturday afternoon matchup against Dalton State on Saturday, January 27th at the West Point Park Gymnasium starting at 2:00 P.M.
