Offensive woes halts Men’s Basketball versus #11 Mobile

MOBILE, Ala. (Jan. 20, 2024) - The Point University Men's Basketball team returned to the court for a road Southern States Athletic Conference matchup against #11 University of Mobile where the Skyhawks fell 70-48. 

The Rams opened the game on a 9-1 run over the Skyhawks but they would be halted as Justice Hayes converted the three-pointer to bring Mobile's lead to five. Mobile's offense continued to start off hot as the Rams scored the following six points which brought their lead to double digits. Theron Montgomery would convert on the mid-range jumper and followed with a made free throw to cut the lead to 15-7. Kenton Steele entered the fray by bringing some much-needed energy off the bench as he scored the following five points for the Skyhawks. Point continued to take their opportunities to score as Vince Graves went 3-for-3 from the charity stripe after being fouled which was followed by a layup from Jeremiah Smith to bring the Mobile lead to 27-17. The Rams ended the half with a 15-4 run to lead 39-23 at the half. 

The second half opened with miscommunication on the Rams' defense as Myles McClain breezed past the defense for the first layup in the half. The Skyhawks continued to take their opportunities in the paint as Jeremiah Smith and Sam Rees scored to bring the game within 10 points. Mobile's offense started to shake the rust as the following three scores extended the lead to 47-30. As the half continued, Point continued to show signs of life with Sam Rees scoring a mid-range jumper. Ashton Nance did not shy away from making his presence known in the paint he dunked the ball with no contest for the following score for Point. Mobile took their biggest lead with 21 points as the balance of the rack attack and three-pointers continued to play a key role in keeping their lead. Ricardo Luis Ortiz scored the final two points for the Skyhawks as the Rams took the win 70-48. 

In the Box 

Kenton Steele led with 13 Points, eight rebounds, and two blocks. Justice Hayes and Sam Rees followed with seven points each. Ricardo Luis Ortiz contributed six points, four rebounds, and one assist.

The Men's Basketball team will return to the West Point Park Gymnasium for a home SSAC rematch with Life University on Wednesday, January 24th starting at 7:30 P.M.
