Men’s Basketball unable to overcome Blue Mountain’s hot shooting night

WEST POINT, Ga. (Jan. 4, 2024) - The Point University Men's Basketball team opened the New Year with a Thursday Night Southern States Athletic Conference matchup against Blue Mountain Christian University at the West Point Gymnasium where the Skyhawks fell 90-75. 

Point got the first half with Joshua Scott powering through for the layup which a followed by two made free throws from Justice Hayes on the following offensive possession. Point added to their quick lead as John Williams converted his signature mid-range jumper to bring the lead to 6-2. The Toppers powered back and took the lead but a made jumper from Jacob Crockett and a layup from Mike Evans brought the game tied at 10. Blue Mountain regained the lead on a 12-3 run to bring their lead to 25-15 in the early going. The Toppers added to the lead with consecutive three-pointers to lead 40-27 with under five minutes left in the half. A layup from Kenton Steele and a mid-range jumper by John Williams cut the Blue Mountain lead to nine. As Point looked to go a run, the Toppers added two consecutive layups to lead 47-34 at the half. 

Blue Mountain opened the second half on a 12-2 run which brought their lead to 20 with a score of 62-42. Point continued to keep the game within the distance as Jeremiah Smith scored on the turnaround jump hook in the paint. The Skyhawks continued to keep the game alive as layups from Jeremiah Smith and Robert Kendrick brought the game to 69-52 with 13:11 left. Point cut the lead to 14 with a jumper from Kendrick along with free throws from Joshua Scott to continue to trade baskets with the Toppers. Blue Mountain followed with consecutive three-pointers and the Skyhawks scored the final two baskets of the game as Mike Evans and Robert Kendrick converted on layups to end the game with Blue Mountain taking the win 90-75.

Joshua Scott led with 15 Points, five rebounds, one steal, and one blocked shot. Jeremiah Smith followed with 11 Points and four rebounds. Robert Kendrick contributed 10 Points and three rebounds.
