Men’s Basketball drops road SSAC Matchup to Thomas

THOMASVILLE, Ga. (Dec. 16, 2023) - The Point University Men's Basketball Team returned to the court for a Saturday afternoon Southern States Athletic Conference matchup against Thomas University where the Skyhawks fell 91-69. 

The first half began with Justice Hayes and Jacob Crockett converting on the first two triples to have the early 6-0 lead. Robert Kendrick added with a mid-range jumper and the Nighthawks responded with the following six points to bring it to an 8-6 game. Point continued to stray the lead further as Joshua Scott and Jacob Crockett converted on the following two jumpers to lead 12-8. Kenton Steele entered the game with an immediate impact as he scored on back-to-back layups with the second being an and-one where he then converted on the free throw. Thomas took the lead with two consecutive three-pointers to bring the score 18-17. Point stayed within the distance as Jacob Crockett scored on the mid-range jumper. The game stayed close as Myles McClain added a jumper to make the 24-22 but the Nighthawks would not take long to bring their lead back to four. The Skyhawks regained the lead as Mike Evans scored on the and-one layup which was followed by a jumper by Jeremiah Smith to lead 28-27. Thomas regained the lead but a jump shot from Kenton Steele brought the game tied at 30. After the Nighthawks scored the following two baskets, Jeremiah Smith knocked down the three-pointer to bring the score back within one point. As Mike Evans scored on the layup, the Nighthawks added five more points to lead 39-35 at the half.  

The Skyhawks got the second half going with a layup from Robert Kendrick to respond to the first score from Thomas. The Nighthawks took a quick 7-0 run which led to Jacob Crockett converting on a three-pointer and a layup to halt the run. Thomas added a 15-0 run to bring their lead 63-42 where Kenton Steele converted on a free throw to stop the run. Jeremiah Smith and Mike Evans scored on the following two layups to look to cut into the lead of the Nighthawks. As Thomas University scored on another three-point ball, Mike Evans added the following three points. Evans continued to find his way into the paint by converting on the following two layups. With Thomas leading 82-56, Justice Hayes converted on a three-pointer and Mike Evans added a layup. The Skyhawks continued to play to the final buzzer as Justice Hayes converted on another three-pointer which was followed by a triple from Jeremiah Smith and a layup by Mike Evans to score the final baskets of the game.

Mike Evans led with 18 Points, six rebounds, and one steal. Jacob Crockett added 13 Points, four rebounds, and two steals. Kenton Steele contributed 11 Points and two rebounds.
