Men’s Basketball falls to Dalton State in road SSAC Play

DALTON, Ga. (Nov. 18, 2023) - The Point University Men's Basketball team returned to the court to for a Saturday afternoon Southern States Athletic Conference matchup against Dalton State College where the Skyhawks fell 92-81. 

Theron Montgomery got the Skyhawks going with the first two baskets of the game with made jump shots. The Roadrunners started the game hot by adding an early 10-point lead with a score of 15-5 over Point but Justice Hayes halted the run with a three-pointer. Jacob Crockett with a jump shot to bring the score 17-10 with Point trailing with under 11 minutes left in the first half. As the game continued, Theron Montgomery added his third make of the game which was followed by a jumper from Kenton Steele. The Roadrunners continued to hold their lead and extend it back to double digits but Robert Kendrick trimmed the lead to single digits with a jumper. Kendrick doubled back on the following possession as he knocked down the three-pointer to bring the score 31-20 with Point trailing. Dalton State's high-powered offense continued to see success by extending the lead but Jacob Crockett and Kenton Steele added another jumper to help Point offensively. Robert Kendrick continued to help the Skyhawks stay within reach as he scored the last two baskets for back-to-back three-pointers as Point trailed 47-31 at the half.  

Kenton Steele started the second half with a jump shot along with Theron Montgomery scoring on a jumper as well. Point continued to find ways to jump-start a comeback as Justice Hayes knocked down three free throws from the charity stripe to help cut into Dalton State's lead more. The Roadrunners' jump shooting continued to stay hot in the half with their biggest lead being 62-43. Mike Evans ended the run with a three-pointer and Kenton Steele followed with a jump shot to bring the score 62-48. The Skyhawks continued to add scoring as Sam Rees knocked down a triple along with following up with a made jumper on the following possession. The Skyhawks cut the lead to 13 as Sam Rees added his second three-pointer of the half and Myles McClain followed with a triple to bring the score to 90-77 with under two minutes left. McClain followed with another three-pointer along with a made free throw from Mike Evans but the late comeback would be halted as Dalton State took the win 92-81.

Robert Kendrick led with 13 Points and five rebounds. Theron Montgomery also added 13 Points with eight rebounds. Justice Hayes and Kenton Steele contributed with 11 Points each off the bench.

The Men's Basketball team will return to action for a road game to take on NCAA Division II, University of West Georgia in an exhibition game starting at 7:00 P.M.
