Men’s Basketball falls to the Running Eagles in SSAC Opener

MARIETTA, Ga. (Nov. 15, 2023) - The Point University Men's Basketball team returned to the court for a Wednesday night matchup on the road at Life University for their Southern States Athletic Conference Opener where the Running Eagles won 78-69. 

The first half began with Joshua Scott setting the tone with a block on the defensive end but the Running Eagles would ultimately score the first basket of the game. Life added 10 more points to start the half on a 12-0 run before Mike Evans made the jump shot to put the Skyhawks on the scoreboard. Joshua Scott and Kenton Steele both followed with layups for the Skyhawks which brought the score 14-8. The Running Eagles responded with a three-pointer along with an and-one dunk to extend the lead to 20-8. Mike Evans brought Life's lead back to single digits as he knocked down a jump shot and followed on the next possession with a three-pointer. The Skyhawks continued to get their offense moving more as Myles McClain added a layup in the paint and Mike Evans followed with another jump shot. Joshua Scott remained unfazed in the paint as he added the following two layups to help Point fight closer into the game. Jacon Crockett fired away with two consecutive three-pointers to cut into the Life's lead with a score of 31-24. Point continued to stay the course as Cameron Wickline added a layup but the Running Eagles responded with a triple. Life would add eight more points to lead 42-31 at the half.  

The second half began with the Running Eagles scoring the first eight points with two made free throws and two three-pointers. Joshua Scott and Robert Kendrick responded with layups to cut Life's lead to 50-36. Mike Evans continued to get his shots going as he hit the third three-pointer of the game which was followed by two layups from Kenton Steele and Robert Kendrick. Point and Life continued to trade baskets but the Running Eagles added extra fuel to the fire with a three-pointer. Myles McClain responded with a deadeye triple and Robert Kendrick added a three-pointer to cut Life's lead to 64-55. The Running Eagles' lead was cut to single digits as Theron Montgomery crashed the offensive boards for the putback layup. Kenton Steele added another layup for Point but Life responded with another three-pointer to bring their lead back to 10 points. The Skyhawks continued to show signs of fight as Myles McClain scored on the jump shot and Robert Kendrick added two free throws from the charity stripe. Life converted on their final five free throws to win 78-69. 

In the Box 

Robert Kendrick and Mike Evans led with 15 Points apiece as Kendrick added seven rebounds along Evans adding three steals. Joshua Scott followed with 10 Points and six rebounds in the contest.
