Men’s Basketball falls to Cumberland at the Firehawk Classic

PULASKI, Tenn. (Nov. 4, 2023) - The Point University Men's Basketball team returned to the court for day two of the Firehawk Classic where the Skyhawks took on Cumberland University and the Skyhawks fell to the Phoenix 67-64. 

The first half began with Theron Montgomery scoring the first points of the game as he made both free throws from the charity stripe. Jacob Crockett followed with a three-pointer to respond to Cumberland's early lead. The back and forth between both teams as Joshua Scott and Robert Kendrick scored on the following made baskets. Jacob Crockett's green light from behind the arc continued as he made his second three-pointer of the half to put Point ahead 12-8. The half continued with Point adding scores as Myles McClain made a jump shot to bring their lead to six. The Phoenix retaliated by getting their offense going as Cumberland made the following three scores to have Point leading by one. The Skyhawks continued to hold onto their lead as Jacob Crockett and Theron Montgomery scored on the next two possessions. However, Cumberland would not go away easily as a quick 7-0 run put the Phoenix ahead 26-24. Kenton Steele and Myles McClain showed their range with jump shots to put the Skyhawks back ahead by two points. A layup from Theron Montgomery and a three-pointer from Jacob Crockett saw the Skyhawks' lead extend. Kenton Steele scored the last basket of the half for Point as the Skyhawks led 38-29 at halftime.  

The Skyhawks started the second half with Justice Hayes scoring the deep ball and Cumberland responded with a jump shot and a three-pointer to cut Point's lead to 43-39. Joshua Scott continued to make his presence on the court felt by making the following two layups for Point. Myles McClain continued to show that he could score as he added another made jump shot for the Skyhawks to lead 50-45. Cumberland would bring the game back within reach as the following two baskets for the Phoenix tied the game at 50. Cumberland followed with taking the lead and looking to extend the game but a made three-pointer from Myles McClain brought the score to 57-55 in crunch time. Point tied the game at 59 as Myles McClain scored another basket and Joshua Scott capped it off with a slam dunk on the following possession. Two free throws from the charity stripe put the Skyhawks back ahead by one. The back and forth started to heighten the stakes of the game as Jacob Crockett scored the go-ahead basket on the tip-in to regain the lead after the response from Cumberland's three. With 30 seconds left, Joshua Scott went 1-for-2 at the free throw line to tie the game at 64 but the Phoenix were able to make their final three free throws to win 67-64.

Jacob Crockett led with 18 Points and five rebounds. Myles McClain followed with 13 Points, five assists, six rebounds, and one steal. Theron Montgomery and Joshua Scott added 10 Points each.
