Battle of I-85 sees Point Football fall to Faulkner in a tight matchup

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (Nov. 4, 2023) - The Point University Football team returned to the field for a nonconference battle against Faulkner University for a Saturday night matchup under the lights where the Skyhawks fell to the Eagles 24-21.

The first half began with both teams starting to figure out each other and the Skyhawks' offense putting together offensive drives to try to move the ball. With their closest drive within reach of the red zone, Faulkner would block the field goal attempt to keep the game at 0-0 in the first quarter. Point wasted no time in the second quarter as the Skyhawks moved the ball on their next offensive possession and Austin Adcock connected with Emery Bryant on the 10-yard Touchdown. Matthew Moses followed with a PAT Field Goal which was converted to have Point lead 7-0. As the quarter moved along, the Eagles retaliated with a big play of a 49-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 7-7. Both teams continued to try to into the half with intentions of having the upper hand but would be unable to convert.

The third quarter began with Point's defense swarming to the ball and Cortez Thomas ending the drive with a sack for a 12-yard loss to get the offense back on the field. The first score of the second half would come from a 24-yard touchdown pass as Mitchell Gossett connected with Emery Bryant to regain the lead at 14-7. Point's defense continued to challenge Faulkner to give it their all but the Eagles would match the intensity by scoring on a 37-yard jump ball pass to tie the game at 14 a piece. As the fourth quarter began, Point looked to punt for good field position for the defense but Faulkner timed the punt perfectly for a block while scooping the football to score and put the momentum on their side. The Skyhawks remained unfazed and lived up to the moment by quickly responding on the first play of the following drive as Emery Bryant scored his third touchdown of the game with Mitchell Gossett connecting with Bryant on a 35-yard pass to tie the game at 21. As the quarter moved along, both teams looked to find their footing to take the game into their own hands. Faulkner looked to push the ball into scoring position by running the clock down and converting on a field goal to take the lead with a score of 24-21. On the final drive, Faulkner would hold their own to not allow Point to convert on a first down or move the ball to win the tightly contested game.
