Point Football falls to Pikeville in road AAC Play

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (Oct. 28, 2023) - The Point University Football team returned to the field for an afternoon Appalachian Athletic Conference game against the University of Pikeville where the Skyhawks fell 42-31. 

The action started with the Bears getting on the scoreboard first as Point would only allow a field goal from Pikeville. The Skyhawks got their offense going as Point completed the 99-yard offensive drive Mitchell Gossett completed a 15-yard passing touchdown to Emery Bryant for Point to lead 7-3 to go into the second quarter. Pikeville came into the second quarter with a big play to respond to Point's touchdown as the Bears scored on a 76-yard passing touchdown to regain the lead 10-7. Mitchell Gossett finished the following drive by using his legs for the 19-yard touchdown run as Point jumped into the lead with the score being 14-10. Matthew Moses helped add more to the Skyhawks' score by kicking a 21-yard field goal to lead by seven. As the half was coming to a close, Pikeville tied the game at 17 after a six-yard touchdown pass.  

The third quarter saw both teams look to try to take the momentum in their hands which paid dividends for Point as the Skyhawks would not allow Pikeville to step foot into the endzone nor allow a field goal. The Skyhawks' offense brought the game back into their hands as Kareem Keye scored on an eight-yard touchdown. As both teams went into the final period of play, the action picked up as Pikeville responded by tying the game on a 21-yard passing touchdown which brought the score to 24-24. The Bears started to put on a tear as the momentum flipped on their end with a pick six which was followed by a passing touchdown on the following drive. As Point looked to respond with a stop, Pikeville would add the final touchdown on their end to extend the lead. The Skyhawks saw Quintravious Teasley scored on the final touchdown of the game but the Skyhawks ultimately fell to the Bears with a final score of 42-31. 

In the Box 

Mitchell Gossett made the start at Quarterback and went 21-for-47 with 246 passing yards for three touchdowns and three interceptions. Trey Inge III led the backfield with 70 yards rushing off 15 attempts with his longest rush being 17 yards. Mitchell Gossett added 46 rushing yards off 11 attempts and one touchdown. Emery Bryant led the receiving core with six catches for 97 yards and one touchdown. Kareem Keye contributed seven catches for 59 yards and one touchdown. Wesley Jones added five catches for 57 yards. Defensively, Caleb Wade led nine tackles and one interception. Kemorion Larkin followed with six tackles.

The Skyhawks will continue their road trip as Point travels down I-85 for a nonconference matchup against Faulkner University in Montgomery, Alabama starting at 7:00 P.M. on Saturday, November 4th.
