Point Football tames the Rams in AAC Thriller

VALLEY, Ala. (Oct. 7, 2023) - The Point University Football team returned to the field for an Appalachian Athletic Conference Matchup against Bluefield University, where the Skyhawks prevailed for the win with a final score of 33-31. 

The Skyhawks came in on a mission to set the tone against the Rams, which paid dividends as Cortez Thomas took a 22-yard Pick Six to the endzone to put Point on the scoreboard first. The Skyhawks continued to set the stage for a Saturday classic when Brenton White walked into the endzone for the one-yard touchdown. The Rams came into the second quarter with intentions of making the game interesting which showed as Bluefield scored the next two touchdowns to tie the game at 14 going to the half. Point's offense continued to put the Rams to the test as Brenton White connected with Emery Bryant on the 32-yard touchdown. Bluefield looked to retaliate on offense, but the Skyhawks' defense swarmed to each play that came their way, forcing the Rams to settle for a field goal to bring the score 21-17. As the quarter winded down, the rushing attack of Sensir Carnes and Brenton White helped create their next opportunity in the endzone as White scored on the one-yard rush. Bluefield did not lose their chance on offense as the Rams responded with an 83-yard touchdown to now trail 27-24 going into the fourth quarter. 

Point's offense continued to make waves of moving the ball on offense but could not get into the endzone. Point's following two scores came from the foot of Matthew Moses as he made the following two field goals to bring the Skyhawks' lead to nine. As the Rams looked for answers to try to secure the late comeback, Bluefield was able to drive the ball into the endzone for the six-yard touchdown to trail 33-31. The Rams looked to try to go for the game-winning drive toward the end of the game but were unable to make the field goal, which helped Point prevail for the hard-fought thriller in Ram Stadium. This win moved the Skyhawks to 2-0 in AAC play and 3-3 overall. 

In the Box 

Brenton White went 9-for-18 with 117 passing yards, one passing touchdown, and two rushing touchdowns. In the running game, Sensir Carnes showed why he is hard to bring down as he secured 121 rushing yards off 25 attempts, with his longest rush being 45 yards. Emery Bryant led the receivers in the air with four receptions for 62 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, Kemorion Larkin continued his hard-nosed style of play with 15 tackles (12 solo and three assists) and added one sack into the mix. Point's defense saw Cortez Thomas, Davyon Dukes, and Caleb Wade catch an interception, with Thomas scoring with a pick-six.
