Skyhawks win the Battle of the "Hawks"

VALLEY, Ala. (September 9, 2023) – The Point University football team played host to Thomas (GA) Nighthawks at Ram Stadium. The Skyhawks would earn their first victory of the season by a score of 20-17.

In a thrilling college football matchup at Ram Stadium in Valley, Ala., the Point University Skyhawks secured a hard-fought victory over the Thomas (GA) team with a final score of 20-17.

Let's break down the key moments of the game, including the scoring drives:

1st Quarter - Point University took an early lead with a 5-yard touchdown pass with 9:54 on the clock from Mitchell Gossett to Emery Bryant. Christian Ceja's successful kick made it 7-0 for Point. The drive lasted 10 plays and covered 64 yards in 5:02.

2nd Quarter – At the 12:48 mark, Thomas would respond with a 3-yard touchdown run by James Amaker, followed by Braxton Crawfor's successful kick, tying the game at 7-7. This drive covered 50 yards in 4:37. Point would regain the lead at the 8:21 mark with a 31-yard touchdown pass from Mitchell Gossett to Emery Bryant. Christian Ceja's kick was good, making it 14-7 for Point. The drive lasted 9 plays and covered 63 yards in 4:32. Thomas fought back with a 6-yard touchdown pass at the 1:30 mark from Chris Carter to Emarje Grace, and Braxton Crawfor's kick was good, tying the game again at 14-14. This drive covered 75 yards in 4:18. - 00:00 - Point managed to get in field goal range just before halftime, and Christian Ceja nailed a 34-yard field goal to give Point a 17-14 lead. The drive covered 47 yards in 1:24.

3rd Quarter - No scoring in this quarter.

4th Quarter - In the first minute of the quarter at 14:09, Thomas would tie the game once more with a 26-yard field goal by Braxton Crawfor, making it 17-17. This drive lasted 13 plays and covered 63 yards in 7:12. At the 11:56 mark in the quarter, Point's Christian Ceja proved to be clutch with a 32-yard field goal, giving Point a 20-17 lead, which they held until the end. This drive covered 28 yards in 2:11.

In terms of statistics, Point University's Mitchell Gossett had a strong passing game with 267 yards and 2 touchdowns, while Emery Bryant was a key target with 96 receiving yards and 2 touchdown receptions. The Point defense was led by Kemorion Larkin, who recorded 10 tackles.

The Skyhawks would get an interception in the red zone from Caleb Wade in the final seconds of the game to help secure the 20-17 victory for Point.
