Skyhawks explosive offense, key in midweek victory

Mount Vernon, Ga. (February 7, 2023) - The Point University baseball team played a road non-conference game against Brewton-Parker College and won by 17-3 run rule in seven innings.

The Skyhawks got the scoring started in the top of the first when Alex Marquand would hit a sacrifice fly to center field that would score Zavion Anderson to give Point a 1-0 lead. That lead would be short lived as the Barons would see A. Sanchez ground out to second base to score J. Phillips. That would be the last time the Barons would score a run until the bottom of the seventh.

In the second inning, Zeb Baird would hit a solo home run to retake the lead at 2-1. The third inning would see Zavion Anderson lead off the inning for the Skyhawks with a home run to make it 3-1. After a Kaleb Podger double, Alex Marquand would double and score Podger to make it 4-1.

The fourth inning would start off with Noah Watkins dropping a bunt down the third base line that would cause the Barons third basemen to throw the ball away and Watkins would advance to second base on the errant throw. After a pop up, Sam Baker would walk and Noah Watkins would steal third base. The Skyhawks would capitalize with two more runs in the game when Kaleb Podger would single in both Noah Watkins and Sam Baker. The score was 6-1 after the fourth inning.

The Skyhawks would tack on four more runs in the fifth inning. The inning would start with a Alex Marquand single and would be followed up by a walk to Jackson Bush. This would later set the stage for Jhamante Woods to hit an absolute three-run no doubt home run over the right field wall giving the Skyhawks a 9-1 lead. Noah Watkins would walk, Zeb Baird singled to left field and Zavion Anderson would reach base all to load the bases for Kaleb Podger. Podger would get hit by a pitch and score Watkins making it 10-1. The bottom of the fifth would see the last inning of work for starting pitcher, Carson Curry. Curry would eventually get the win in his five innings of work, allowing one run off of three hits, walking two and striking out two Baron batters.

The sixth inning started off with a Jackson Bush solo home run to give the Skyhawks a ten-run lead at 11-1. After Slade Mink was hit by a pitch, Adam Barnett would hit a two-run home run to make it 13-1. After a pitching change, Jaysen Dower would be hit by a pitch  and Jeremiah Martin would walk. Demetrius Foster would hit into a fielder's choice making it runners at 1st and 3rd with one out. JR Curley would double to score Dower to make it 14-1. Alex Marquand would later single to score Foster to make it a 15-1 game. A walk to Jackson Bush would load the bases. Miguel Fernandez would get walked and that would score Curley to make it 16-1. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Salter Greene would enter the game on the mound for the Skyhawks. Greene would pitch a scoreless sixth inning, adding a strikeout and also not allowing a hit on his first outing of the season.

The top of the seventh would start off with a Noah Watkins single. Chase Tolbert would walk. After a quick two outs, Kaleb Podger would single to load the bases. Alex Marquand would walk and that would score Watkins to make it a 17-1 game. The Barons would get two runs back in the bottom of the seventh off of relief pitch Clay Smith, but that wasn't enough to stop the Skyhawks from run ruling the Barons in seven innings by a score of 17-3.
