Baseball falls in season opener to IU Kokomo

 

EMERSON, Ga. (February 3, 2023) – The Point University baseball team hosted Indiana University Kokomo, Friday afternoon in a non-conference matchup at LakePoint Sports Complex and fell to the Cougars 14-2. 

The Cougars started fast, scoring two runs in the first inning. IU Kokomo's Riley Garcynski connected for a solo home run to lead off the game on a 3-1 pitch from Skyhawks starting pitcher, Daniel Crabtree. The Cougars would scratch another run across in the top of the first off of a single by D Steele to make it 2-0. The Skyhawks would respond in the bottom of the first with a sac fly by Jackson Bush, that would score the courtesy runner, Demetrius Foster who was running for Skyhawks catcher, Alex Marquand.

The Skyhawks would fall behind 7-1 after five complete innings. Jhamante Woods would homer to left center field to make it a 7-2 game in the bottom of the sixth. After the Skyhawks couldn't answer anymore in the bottom of the sixth, the Cougars would bring home seven runs across the dish to make it a 14-2 game heading into the bottom of the seventh.

Point would go down in order in the bottom of the seventh to give the Cougars the 14-2 run rule victory after seven innings.

Slade Mink led the way going 2 for 3 at the plate. Jhamante Woods would go 1 for 3 with a HR in the game. Kaleb Podger and Noah Watkins would each add a hit for the Skyhawks. Jackson Bush and Woods would each collect a RBI on the day.

Point had 2 runs, 5 hits and committed 2 errors in the field.

Winning Pitcher - Ben Harris (1-0)

Losing Pitcher – Daniel Crabtree (0-1)

Point returns to action on Saturday as the Skyhawks will face St. Andrew's and Cumberland (TN) back in Emerson, GA tomorrow at 12 and 3:30 P.M.
