Point opens AAC play with win over No. 21 Reinhardt

WEST POINT, Ga. (Feb. 25, 2022) – Cole Brown and Casteen Reed combined for nine shutout innings on the mound, and Kole Sonnier went 3-for-3 at the plate to help the Point University baseball team defeat No. 21 Reinhardt University 4-0 Friday evening in West Point.

With Friday's win, the Skyhawks open Appalachian Athletic Conference play 1-0 and end a four-game losing skid.

After three scoreless innings, Point pushed two runs across the board in the bottom of the fourth, following a double to right field from Jakobe Smith that allowed Dillon Brown to advance to third, and a wild pitch the following at-bat would allow Brown to score. Francisco Garcia would follow with a single up the middle to score Smith.

In the following inning, a fielder's choice would bring home Alex Marquand, and a sacrifice fly from Garcia would score Sonnier to extend Point's lead 4-0.

Brown and Reed would combine for just one hit over the last three innings to help secure the victory for Point.

Brown is now 3-1 on the season as he tossed 7.0 innings, giving up three hits, three walks and striking out eight. Reed went 2.0 innings, giving up no hits, walking two and striking out one. At the plate, Sonnier recorded three of Point's 11 hits and Garcia led the Skyhawks in runs scored as he was 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

Up next, the doubleheader portion of this series will take place tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 25, with first pitch of game one scheduled for 1 p.m.
