Consistent effort bolsters the Skyhawks to another sweep

WEST POINT, Ga. (Sept. 27, 2022) - The Point University volleyball team returned to action at the West Point Gymnasium in an Appalachian Athletic Conference matchup against St. Andrews University and came out victorious with a sweep 3-0.  

Play by play (25-18, 25-17, 25-22) 

Point came into the match, firing on all cylinders by starting off with a 4-0 lead. St. Andrews quickly returned the favor by responding to the Skyhawks' quick lead by cutting their lead just one in the early beginning. Point refused to give up their lead as their next three scores came off kills from Sarah Baucham, Paige Lowe and Abigail Hardwick to bring their lead back to four. After the timeout from the Knights, The Skyhawks did not let their foot off the gas on the net as they added three more kills to bring the lead to eight. As the set neared the end, St. Andrews tried to make a comeback of their own, but an attack error from the Knights and a kill by Sameily Marquez extended the lead to 23-16. The Knights gathered themselves by scoring the next two points but would be halted as a service error along with an attack error ended the match 25-18.  

The second set brought more energy from the Skyhawks as Whitney Ward started with a kill to get Point on the scoreboard first. As the set went on, both teams traded points with each other, along with having the game tied at six. The Skyhawks quickly tallied three points in their favor as Hardwick and Ward added kills for Point along with an attack error from the Knights. St. Andrews regrouped as a team to bring the score to 12-12 after being down by four which caused Point to call a timeout. The Knights took the lead but would not hold it for long as the Skyhawks fired back with a 4-0 run. Point ended the on a 10-2 run to go up two sets as they headed to the third. 

The third set did not disappoint as St. Andrews started off with a 3-0 lead after attacking with three kills. The Skyhawks fought back into the game with Marquez three straight kills along with a service error from the Knights. Both teams went back and forth on the scoreboard until St. Andrews took the lead for most of the set and took their biggest lead of five. Following the timeout from the Skyhawks, Point took the court with a mindset to attack as their comeback consisted of kills to take the lead 20-19. St. Andrews fought to add another set on the night, but the momentum from the Skyhawks served to be too much as they completed their comeback to win 25-22. 

In the box 

Sameily Marquez continued her hot streak on the offensive end with 13 kills. Whitney Ward was not too far behind as she added 11 kills, along with Abigail Hardwick contributing eight. Jordan Palmer showed consistency on the defensive end with 31 digs on the evening. Paige Lowe followed with 17 of her own. Lowe also dished out 37 assists for the Skyhawks.
