Skyhawks down Rams on Carlisle’s golden goal

WEST POINT, Ga. (Oct. 20, 2021) – The Point University women's soccer team defeated Columbia International University, 1-0, in overtime Wednesday afternoon, as Kelly Carlisle's golden goal in the 94th minute was the difference inside River Bowl Stadium.

The Skyhawks' goal started with a throw-in from Savana Schill from the other side of the field that found Josseline Rodriguez, who fed the ball to Tamia Jones at midfield. Jones was then able to send the ball down the field to Carlisle, who was able to break past defenders and score the winning goal.

"Really different atmosphere today from Saturday, but the same kind of game," Head Coach Randy Douglas said. "CIU's midfield and interplay with their forwards and outside mids is very good, so I feel defensively we played really well. Erica (Burkhardt) had a great 1 v 1 stop on their #11 and we made it to extra time. Tamia played a superb ball in and gave Kelly a great chance and she managed to finish it. A team win if there was ever one!"

Point outshot the Rams 12-7, however, all seven of CIU's shots were on frame, while Point had six. Erica Burkhardt preserved a blank slate with five saves, with three of the five saves coming in the final 14 minutes of regulation. Carlisle's goal increased her season total to six.

The game marked Point's fifth shutout of the season, including its second within a week. The win helped the Skyhawks advance to 6-7-1 (6-3-1 AAC). Point currently is fifth in the AAC standings.

The Skyhawks only have four games remaining in the regular season and only one more road game. Point's final road game of the season will be on Friday, Oct. 22, as the Skyhawks travel to Kentucky Christian for a 4 p.m. matchup. Point will then return home for its final three games of the season, first facing Union on Sunday, Oct. 25, at noon.
