Skyhawks cap off senior day with victory

WEST POINT, Ga. (Oct. 16, 2021) – The Point University women's soccer team hosted Montreat College in an Appalachian Athletic Conference matchup Saturday afternoon and earned a 1-0 victory over the Cavaliers.

Saturday at halftime, the women's soccer team honored their 12 seniors, Marissa Amaya, Carmen Kager, Brunella Cassalino, Vanessa Lara, Nathaly Villalobos, Erica Burkhardt, Lesley Torres, Emily Porter, Keiry Bonilla, Kelly Carlisle, Jasmine Mathis and Josseline Rodriguez.

It was a quiet first half as both teams entered the second half scoreless, but Tamia Jones, off an assist from Kager's corner kick, would take charge and put the Skyhawks ahead in the second half at the 73-minute mark. Jones' goal turned out to be the game-winning goal, as Point held Montreat scoreless for the remainder of the game.

Montreat outshot Point 12-11, and Burkhardt recorded six saves in defensive effort. Mathis led Point's offense with four shots.

"Senior day is always special, but getting a win against a very good team took a lot of focus because of the number of potential distractions," Head Coach Randy Douglas said. "I thought both teams played well, but we earned enough corners and one of them worked out. Thankfully Tamia was in the right place at the right time. Erica also had a couple of critical saves that enabled us to get a well-deserved win."

With Saturday's win, the Skyhawks improve to 5-7-1 on the season and 3-3-1 in conference play.

Next, Point hosts another conference foe in Columbia International University, on Wednesday, Oct. 20, at 3:30 p.m.
