Women’s Basketball picks first conference win against the Rams

WEST POINT, Ga. (Nov. 5, 2022) - The Point University women's basketball team returned to action Saturday afternoon in the West Point Park Gymnasium for their Appalachian Athletic Conference opener versus Bluefield College and came out victorious 72-60. 

Both teams played each other close in the first quarter, with the Rams starting off by taking the lead three times over the Skyhawks. Point continued to hang in the game as Marta Gimenez made a three-pointer near the end of the quarter to move ahead by one. The Rams responded with a buzzer-beater three-pointer to lead 22-21 as both teams went into the next period. Point started to find their way as a team as Gimenez made another three-pointer which was followed by a three from Mirial Cannon to lead 27-26 now. Mataea Boyd added her contribution to the three-point barrage to help push the Skyhawks ahead 31-27 with 5:35 left in the half. Ky'Leo Worriels helped Point move their lead to 10 with a mid-range jumper along with a layup with a minute left. Bluefield responded with a layup to cut their deficit to single digits until Mataea Boyd scored another layup for the Skyhawks to go into halftime with a 39-29 lead. 

Bluefield started the third quarter off by cutting their deficit to single digits in hopes of slowing down the momentum from Point. Ananda Hughley made two free throws to push their lead back to ten which was followed by a three-pointer from Matea Boyd. The Skyhawks took their biggest lead of the game of 15 points after a made layup from Mirial Cannon to lead 50-35. As the quarter neared its end, Point continued to show teamwork by moving the ball around, which helped their offense flow to a 54-42 lead heading into the final period. 

Bluefield scored the first four points of the quarter to now trail 54-46. Marta Gimenez showed her ways of anchoring the defense with a steal to extend Point's lead back to double digits. Matea Boyd also added a steal to score the layup to help contribute to Point's defense. The Skyhawks continued to counter Bluefield each time the Rams scored with an offensive possession of points or forced a turnover on the next possession. Ky'Leo Worriels extended the lead on an offensive rebound to now make the 66-53. The Skyhawks finished the final minute with made layups and free throws to hold their lead along with picking up their win on the season. 

In the box 

Mataea Boyd filled up the stats sheet with 17 points, five steals, and nine rebounds. Mirial Cannon and Ky'Leo Worriels contributed 14 points for the Skyhawks. Marta Gimenez recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 assists, along with tallying four steals on the defensive end.
