Women’s basketball survives tough battle with TMU

CLEVELAND, Ga. (Dec. 4, 2021) — Behind a strong third quarter performance, led by senior Nicole Izuagie, the Point University women's basketball team walked away victorious against Truett McConnell University Saturday afternoon, pulling off a 47-46 win.

With Saturday's win, the Skyhawks remain undefeated, advancing to 9-0 (6-0 AAC).

On the court 

The Bears took an early 10-6 lead to open Saturday's contest, before back-to-back made layups from Jasmine Griggs and Sheyvonne Owens, evened the score at 10. Alexis Tate would follow to give Point its first lead of the game; and Owens would finish the quarter with a jump shot to send the Skyhawks into the second quarter leading 14-13.

In the second quarter, neither team was able to take more than a 3-point lead as there were two ties and four lead changes. The Bears looked to enter the break leading 23-21, but with 25 seconds left, Izuagie connected for a 3-pointer to send Point into the breaking leading 24-23.

Out of the half, Izuagie connected with another triple to extend Point's lead out 27-23. The Skyhawks would go on to earn their largest lead of the day at 36-26, following  back-to-back three-pointers from Marta Gimenez and Izuagie. With less than 3:30 remaining in the quester, Truett would go on a 9-0 run to enter the final quarter trailing by six (41-35). 

Tate would extend Point's lead back out to 10 with back-to-back made jump shots to start the period, but the Bears' defense would prevent Point from scoring for over the next eight minutes, while the Bears' offense would go on an 11-0 run, retaking the lead with less than two minutes left in the game. Hannah Williams with 57 seconds left in the contest, would connect for a layup to put Point ahead 47-46 and the Skyhawks would hold the lead for the rest of the game. 

In the box 

Izuagie finished the day leading all-scorers with 16 points, connecting for five baskets from the perimeter. Tate followed with 10 points, going 4-for-8 from the field. Gimenez and Owens both followed with seven points apiece, and led Point under the basket with nine and 10 rebounds respectively. Gimenez led the team with five assists and three steals.

Up next, Point will host Paine in a nonconference midweek matchup on Wednesday, Dec. 8, at 6 p.m. The Skyhawks final matchup of the 2021 portion of the season will be on Saturday, Dec. 11, at Milligan University.
