Women’s basketball defeats KCU behind career-high from Gimenez

WEST POINT, Ga. (Nov. 13, 2021) – The Point University women's basketball team hosted Kentucky Christian University Saturday afternoon in an Appalachian Athletic Conference matchup, and the Skyhawks remained undefeated on the season, as they defeated the Knights 80-72.

With Saturday's win, Point advances to 5-0 (3-0 AAC), and KCU drops to 2-3 (1-3 AAC).

The Knights and Skyhawks played a close opening quarter, with the largest lead of the quarter coming off a triple from Iyanna McMillan, extending the Skyhawks lead out by four (16-12). KCU did not allow Point's lead to get any larger as they tied the game at 18 and went on to take the lead entering the second quarter (22-21).

Point made quick work in taking its lead back as Hannah Williams connected for a 3-pointer and followed with two made free-throws less than a minute later to give Point the lead 28-24. The Skyhawks extended its lead out to as many as 11 off a made layup from Jasmine Griggs and entered the break ahead 42-36.

At the break, the Skyhawks had three members already in double figures, led by Alexis Tate with 12 points and eight rebounds, followed by McMillan and Marta Gimenez with 10 apiece.

Point held the lead for the entire third quarter, but KCU made a late quarter attempt, going on a 6-0 run to cut the Skyhawks' lead down to two (53-51). This would be as close as the Knights would get as back-to-back trips to the free-throw line from McMillan and Williams would extend Point's lead back out by four. A triple from Gimenez would help send Point into the final quarter leading 62-54.

The Skyhawks looked poised to finish Saturday's game with ease, as they extended their lead out by 12 early in the final frame, but the Knights battled back in the waning minutes, going on a 7-1 run to trail 71-69. Point answered with a run of their own, closing the final two minutes on a 9-3 run.

Gimenez connected for a career-high of 21 points and recorded four rebounds and five steals. She was followed by McMillan, who registered 19 points, Williams, with 16 and Tate with a double-double of 15 points and 14 boards.

Up next, Point will host Southeastern Baptist in a nonconference matchup on Tuesday, Nov. 16, at 5 p.m. for its final home game of the month. Point will travel to Union for an AAC matchup on Saturday, Nov. 20, for its last game before Thanksgiving break.
