Skyhawks extend win streak with victory at Brenau

GAINESVILLE, Ga. (Nov. 9, 2021) –The Point University women's basketball team continued their winning momentum Tuesday evening with a 79-58 win over Appalachian Athletic Conference foe Brenau University. With the win, the Skyhawks advance to 4-0 on the season and 2-0 in conference play.

It was a collective effort from the Skyhawks as Point's entire starting five recorded double-digit scoring and filled the stat sheet in multiple categories. Scoring was led by sophomore point guard Hannah Williams with 19 points and six rebounds. Williams shot 7-for-11 from the field and went 4-for-4 from the three-point line. Junior forward Sheyvonne Owens was next on the stats sheet where recording a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Senior guard Iyanna McMillan has now made it in the double-digit scoring column in every game this season, as she scored 13 points and added six rebounds. Marta Gimenez had a productive outing, recording 11 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Capping off Point's double-digit scoring was senior forward Alexis Tate with 10 point and was 4-for-7 from the field.

Early on it was a close matchup between the two teams, but Point would go on a 12-5 run sparked by a made layup by Gimenez. Brenau would answer back with a run of their own to end the first quarter cutting Point's lead to just two points going into the second quarter. From there the Skyhawks would come back the aggressor as they stretched their lead to 10 points off an 11-3 run. The Tigers would fight back, but a late surge from the Skyhawks helped them regain control going into the second half with a score of 41-30.

The Skyhawks would dominate the Tigers as they were able to increase their lead to 21 points halfway through the third quarter. Point maintained control for the rest of the contest as they cruised to a big-time victory in conference play.

Head Coach Tory Wooley had this to say on the evening, "I thought today was a great team win and our ladies did an outstanding job on the defensive side of the ball not allowing a player on the opposing team to reach double figures scoring. We shot the ball exceptionally well from 3 (40%) and from the free throw line (84%). I'm proud of the effort of our ladies on getting this road win against a competitive team."

Point will return home for another AAC matchup against Kentucky Christian University on Saturday, Nov. 13. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
