Skyhawks open AAC play with victory over Knights

WEST POINT, Ga. (Nov. 6, 2021) - Despite a close first half, the Point University women's basketball team was able to clinch their first conference win of the season, as they defeated Appalachian Athletic Conference foe St. Andrews University 68-57 Saturday afternoon inside West Point Park Gymnasium. The Skyhawks remain undefeated on the season and advance to 3-0 with the win.

Early on, the Skyhawks came out the gate with an 11-4 run over the Knights, but that would soon change as St. Andrews would compete to match Point's intensity. Throughout the first quarter, it was a back-and-forth battle; although Point maintained the lead the entire quarter, the Knights kept the game within reach, not letting the lead build higher than seven points. In the second quarter, St. Andrews closed the scoring gap between the teams by holding the Skyhawks to just six points in the quarter. The Knights would capitalize off this with a run to tie the game up at 26 going into halftime.

Point would answer after the half starting with a 15-2 run sparked by senior point guard Marta Gimenez off a three-point shot. St. Andrews would battle back late in the game to bring the scoring margin within five points, but this would be as close as they would reach as the Skyhawks would end the game victorious.

It was a collective effort from Point University as three Skyhawks cracked double-digits in scoring. Iyanna McMillan and Gimenez led the way with 11 points each. Alexis Tate followed with 10 points going 3-for-7 from the field. Sheyvonne Owens led Point with nine rebounds on the day.

Up next, Point will travel to Gainesville, Georgia, on Tuesday, Nov. 9, to compete against Brenau University in an AAC matchup. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
