Softball splits with No. 24 TWU

ATHENS, Tenn. (April 7, 2022) – Behind a 2-RBI triple from Haley Lyner and a one-run complete game from Katelyn Jiles, the Point University softball team bounced back from a 6-0 deficit in game one to defeat No. 24 Tennessee Wesleyan 3-1 Thursday afternoon in Appalachian Athletic Conference play.

With the split, the Skyhawks are now 25-15 (15-7 AAC), and TWU is 27-4 (19-3 AAC).

Game one- Point 0, TWU 6

It was all Bulldogs in game one, as TWU struck first with two runs in the bottom of the first. These were the only earned runs that starting pitcher Mary Burnham would give up, as Tennessee Wesleyan scored four runs in the sixth, all unearned.

In the top of the seventh, Devin Foster prevented Tennessee Wesleyan from earning a no-hitter as she led off with a single to left field. This would be the Skyhawks' only hit of the game. The Skyhawks would have two other batters reach base, with Meagan Pildner walking and Alexus Griffin reaching base on an error.

Burnham suffered the loss as she went six innings, gave up 10 hits, six runs (two earned), walked one and struck out one.

Game two- Point 3, TWU 1

Tennessee Wesleyan was the first team on the scoreboard to start game two, but the Skyhawks evened the score in the top of the fifth, following an RBI single from Brianna Plocharczyk that scored McKensie Barnes. Lyner connected for a 2-RBI triple two innings later, scoring Plocharczyk and Foster to help Point take the lead (3-1). The Skyhawks were able to keep the Bulldogs from making a comeback in the bottom of the inning to earn the victory in game two.

Point outhit TWU 10-6 in game two, with Plocharczyk leading the way, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Foster and Taylor Knight followed with two hits each and Lyner, Pildner and Ariyon Hightower each connected for a hit. Lyner led the team with two RBIs. Jiles earned her ninth win and tossed her sixth complete game, going all seven innings, giving up six hits, one run (earned) and striking out three.

The Skyhawks will be back in action on Saturday as they host Montreat College in an AAC doubleheader, with first pitch of game one scheduled for 2 p.m.
