Skyhawks fall to Brewton-Parker in nonconference action

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. (March 8, 2022) – The Point University softball team traveled to face Brewton-Parker College in a nonconference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon and fell to the Barons 5-3 and 3-1.

Game one- Point: 3, BPC: 5

In game one, Point took an early lead, scoring a run in the top of the first after a single up the middle from Asia Jones brought in Haley Lyner. The Barons answered, scoring one run in the bottom of the second and two runs in the bottom of the third. In the top of the fourth, Point tied the score 3-3 following a single to left field from Devin Foster that scored Taylor Knight and an infield groundout from Brianna Plocharczyk to score Chelsea Parker. Point held Brewton-Parker scoreless in the bottom of the inning and the fifth inning, but the Barons were able to take a 2-run advantage in the bottom of the sixth, and Point was unable to perform a comeback.

The Skyhawks combined for seven hits, with Knight leading the way, going 2-for-3. Mary Burnham got the start, going 3.1 innings, giving up six hits and three runs (two earned), but Ashlynn Hamm suffered the loss, going 2.2 innings, giving up three hits and two runs (one earned).

Game two- Point: 1, BPC: 3

After getting the Skyhawks out in order in the top of the first, BPC went on to score a run in the bottom of the inning to take an early 1-0 lead. Point was able to even things up in the top of the third, following an infield groundout from Lyner that scored Parker. After holding the Barons scoreless in the bottom of the inning, neither team would score for the next two innings until Brewton-Parker was able to extend their lead by two in the bottom of the sixth. The Barons would get the Skyhawks out in order in the top of the seventh to secure the sweep.

The Skyhawks combined for four hits in game two, with Foster, Plocharzcyk, Gabrielle Riley, and Parker going 1-for-3. Katelyn Jiles suffered the loss, going 6.0 innings, giving up nine hits, three runs (all earned) and striking out one.
