Point’s offense remains dominant as Skyhawks sweep Bluefield

BLUEFIELD, Va. (March 3, 2022) – Meagan Pildner connected for three home runs, and Kayla Wyatt connected for two to help lead the Point University softball team to a sweep over Bluefield University Thursday evening in Appalachian Athletic Conference play.

Game one: Point- 9, Bluefield- 2

Wyatt got the Skyhawks on the board in the top of the second with a solo home run, and a fielder's choice in the top of the third would bring home Devin Foster to help the Skyhawks take a 2-0 lead. In the top of the fourth, Point rallied for five runs, with two home runs. The first was a two-run shot to left field from Pildner, and the second was a 3-run shot to left field by Gabrielle Riley. The Rams were able to get two runs back in the bottom of the sixth, with a triple from Macy Martin that scored two, but Pildner answered in the top of the seventh with a two-run shot over the left field fence to help the Skyhawks earn a game one victory.

Mary Burnham got the start and the win, going 5.0 innings, giving up five hits, one run (earned) and striking out one. Point combined for 11 hits, with Foster going 3-for-3, Riley going 2-for-4 with three RBIs, Pildner going 2-for-4 with four RBIs, and Wyatt going 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Game two: Point- 12, Bluefield- 4

The Skyhawks' hot-hitting carried over to game two as Point posted seven runs in the second and four runs in the third inning. An error would bring home Wyatt to get Point its first run, and then a 3-run home run from Pildner would extend Point's lead out 4-0. Back-to-back singles to left field from Lyner and Jones would bring in one run apiece, and an RBI single from Wyatt would score Lyner. A sacrifice fly by the Rams in the bottom of the inning would make the score 7-1, entering the third inning.

Point's rally carried over to the third inning, as back-to-back errors would score Pildner and Foster, and a single to center field from Wyatt would score Riley and Lyner, making the score 11-1. In the top of the fifth, Wyatt would connect for a solo home run, putting the Skyhawks ahead by 11, which proved to be needed, as the Rams scored four runs in the bottom of the inning, cutting Point's lead back down to eight, but a flyout to center field would end Bluefield's scoring threat, and help put the run-rule into effect in the fifth inning.

Point connected for 10 hits in game two, with Lyner going 2-for-4, Wyatt going 4-for-4 with four RBIs and Pildner going 1-for-4 with three RBIs. Katelyn Jiles earned the win, going 2.2 innings, giving up six hits and one run (earned), and Ashlynn Hamm came in for relief, going 2.2 innings, giving up four hits, three runs (all earned), walking two, and striking out one.
