Softball sweeps KCU in dominant fashion

WEST POINT, Ga. (Feb. 28, 2022) – The Point University softball team put up 10 runs in the second inning of game one to help earn a 13-1 victory in five innings and went on to win game two 7-0 to sweep Monday afternoon's Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader over Kentucky Christian University.

Game one- Point: 13, KCU: 1

The Knights took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but their lead was short-lived as Point scored 10 runs in the bottom of the second. Point's rally began with a double down the right field line from Chelsea Parker to score Kayla Wyatt, tying the game 1-1. An RBI single from Pildner would bring home Parker and Taylor Knight, and Pildner would come home on an error that allowed McKensie Barnes to reach base. The Skyhawks would return to the top of the lineup and load the bases for Haley Lyner to scorch one through the five-six hole to score Barnes and Devin Foster. With the Skyhawks up 6-1, an error would allow Brianna Plocharczyk and Lyner to score to extend Point's lead out 8-1. The Skyhawks would bat around, with Wyatt sending a ball through the five-six hole to score Asia Jones and a bases-loaded walk to Barnes would score Wyatt to put the Skyhawks ahead 10-1.

Point would extend its lead in the third with a single up the middle by Lyner to score Polcharczyk and add two more runs in the fourth with a hit from Lyner to score Foster and a hit from Jones to score Lyner.

Point combined for 13 hits with Lyner leading the way, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs. She was followed by Jones and Meagan Pildner, who each went 2-for-3, with Jones accounting for an RBI and Pildner recording two.

Ashlynn Hamm got the win, going 5.0 innings, giving up five hits, two walks, and striking out one.

Game two- Point: 7, KCU: 0

Point got on the board early in the bottom of the first, with an infield groundout from Plocharczyk bringing home Foster, who reached base on a triple to center field. Foster would then drive in two runs in the following inning with a double to center field that scored Pildner and Parker. In the bottom of the third, Parker would connect for a two-run home run, her first of the season, to extend Point's lead out 5-0. Parker would add to Point's lead in the bottom of the fifth with an infield single to score Wyatt, and a sacrifice fly from Meagan Pildner would bring home Gabrielle Riley.

The Skyhawks recorded 11 hits, with Parker going 3-for-3 with three RBIs, Foster going 3-for-4 with two RBIs, and Jones going 2-for-4. Katelyn Jiles pitched a complete game shutout, going 7.0 innings, giving up four hits, walking two, and striking out two.

With Monday's wins, Point advances to 12-6 (5-1 AAC).

The Skyhawks will be back in action on Thursday as they travel to play Bluefield in an AAC doubleheader, with first pitch of game one scheduled for 1 p.m. The Skyhawks will then play at WVU Tech on Friday, March 4, with first pitch of game one scheduled for 1 p.m.
