No. 23 men’s tennis defeats UT Southern; women fall

DECATUR, Ala. (April 2, 2022) – The Point University men's and women's tennis teams started a three-match road trip Friday afternoon and started their weekend by facing UT Southern in Decatur, Ala.

The No. 23 men's team won 4-3 and the women fell 6-1. The men's game came down to the final match, as the Skyhawks entered singles play with the doubles point, as Alexandre Verlaguet and Guido Luna won 6-2 at No. 1 doubles, and Trey Maust and Gavin Thomas won 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.

Maust earned a quick 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 4 singles to help the Skyhawks take a 2-0 lead, but UT Southern answered by winning at No. 6 singles (6-1, 6-0). Luna earned a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 1 singles to help the Skyhawks take a 3-1 lead, but the Fire Hawks tied the match 3-3 as they won at No. 2 and No. 3 singles.

At No. 5 singles, Santiago Speranza jumped out to a 1-0 set lead as he won 6-3 before falling 3-6 in set two. Speranza quickly bounced back and won the third set 10-3 to help earn the victory for Point.

MEN'S DOUBLES MATCHES

  • Verlaguet/Luna won 6-2
  • Maust/Thomas won 6-2
  • Speranza/Brody Millwood lost 5-7

MEN'S SINGLES MATCHES

The women's lone win of the day came from Tania Herrera at No. 6 singles as she won her match 6-1, 6-7(2), 10-7. UT Southern swept the doubles matchups.

WOMEN'S DOUBLES MATCHES

  • Ovejero/McKenzie lost 5-7
  • Villalobos/Gallman lost 5-7
  • Gonzalez/Herrera lost 3-6

WOMEN'S SINGLES MATCHES

  • Andrea Ovejero Fernandez lost 4-6, 5-7
  • Sofia Villalobos lost 5-7, 4-6
  • Lisa McKenzie lost 2-6, 0-6
  • Joanna Gallman lost 4-6, 1-6
  • Sofia Gonzalez lost 2-6, 1-6
  • Tania Herrera won 6-1, 6-7(2), 10-7
