Eskew’s goal lifts men’s soccer to victory over Bulldogs

WEST POINT, Ga. (Oct. 24, 2021) – Freshman Tommy Eskew scored a goal in the 79th minute, and the Point University men's soccer team defeated Union 1-0 Sunday afternoon in River Bowl Stadium.

Point's win snapped Union's seven-game win streak. The Skyhawks are now 7-5-1 overall and 6-5 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference.

Eskew's winning goal

Overtime began to come into question as the match was reaching its waning minutes with neither team on the scoreboard. In the 79th minute, a foul by Union would set the Skyhawks up with a free-kick from near midfield. The free-kick from Lorenzo Delvecchio would deflect across the box to Facundo Palacio, who fired a shot, but Union goalkeeper Pedro Moreira made the save. Moreira was unable to hold onto Palacio's shot and Eskew was able to capitalize and send the ball into the left side of the net to put the Skyhawks on the board 1-0.

Point's defense prevented the Bulldogs from scoring an equalizer and the Skyhawks were able to preserve a clean sheet.

In the box

Point outshot Union 5-2 in the first half, but the Bulldogs' offense was hard at work in the second half as Union outshot Point 12-6. Three of the Bulldogs' shots were taken in the final minutes of action, but Point's defense held a solid front to prevent the Bulldogs from sending the game into overtime. Point's defense recorded eight saves, with goalkeeper Julio Gomes recording three.

Sophomore Jeronimo Leguizamon led Point's offensive attack with four shots and was followed by Palacio, who had three.

"Today was a tough battle against a good Union side who was on a great run of form coming into today's game," Head Coach Mark Wozniak said. "We knew a win was important and we had to make sure we gave it all to get the three points. We showed a fight and character within the team today and I am happy for the guys to finish out this week with a great win. We can now turn our attention to Senior Night on Wednesday and keep the same winning mentality."
